Don’t doubt it, working in a kitchen is hard labour and stressful. Both my parents are diagnosed with RSI and suffers from immense joint pain, these people need to be paid more and anyone who says otherwise can shove it
In retail too, unlike mainland Europe, our high street shops don’t have functioning AC
Air-conditioning, etc, will become a necessity going forward in a way we’re not really used to here.
We will need a clear law soon on heat, particularly for construction and outdoor labourers.
Unusually warm đ§
it’s not really “unusual” though is it – the warnings have been for years that climate change will make the planet inhospitable for humans, and here it is doing that…are we really shocked?Â
Think it was warmer last year.
In few years, would be looking at what AC to install… In Ireland. What a time to be alive.
If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Seriously though most modern kitchens have ventilation systems to manage summer and winter conditions. If not I’m sure its difficult.
The coke was literally dissolving off the stainless steel before they could do a line!Â
What was that phrase about handling heat in kitchens?
It’s too hot to do anything but lie in bed with the fan on.
Read my comment again. I said if its not properly ventilated its a difficult. I feel for anyone working in those conditions.
It’s hard in any indoors space that doesn’t have AC, and I’m checking my privilege for that statement.
I wouldn’t be able to work a kitchen in this weather with no ventilation or AC that isn’t designed for that, although I haven’t worked a restaurant in decades, and I grew up in a much warmer climate.
I’m surprised that there are not more places that are just shut today because the kitchen staff simply refuse to work in these conditions.
Edit: spelling.
More coke needed… Drink plenty of waterÂ
Did close to 10 years in a kitchen. Got out during covid. I could only begin to imagine how incredibly fucking shit working this summer would be in the heat. One of my favourite nights working in a summer was when our ventilation broke before service and our sous chef telling us “you don’t have to work in it, but you might not have your job tomorrow”. We’ll do our bookings only and no walk ins. 5 minutes in, 5 minutes out. It was like someone putting a hairdryer on your eyes when you stepped in. An experience but fuck me never ever again nor would I wish it on someone else.
If you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen
23 degrees is average Spring for the rest of Europe.

Kitchens, hardest game of all that is, did it myself for 40 years, man and boy.
So much sweat
In our âSuperâ shop I work in , the owner comes in and TURNS OFF the air conditioning because he probably doesnât want to pay the bills for it.
Like itâs shocking how crazy this is.
Iâm currently in Spain and today the temperature reached 41 degrees, and I work inside a kitchen, itâs the worst experience that I have ever faced in my life. It feels like the devil himself is blowing hot air directly into your face nonstop.
