“The Royal Opera now faces a defining choice: between status and responsibility, between profit and values, between silence and conscience.” Artistry, beauty, and music aren’t considerations then.
She’s against the war in Ukraine, doesn’t live in Russia and does not support the Russian separatists. What more is she supposed to do, considering what happens to people who speak out against Putin?
This is xenophobia.
Also I am sick of any British organisation or politician complaining about Putin’s Russia now. We are arming a genocide, we have online ID checks, are arresting protestors and have facial recognition police vans.
We ARE Russia.
Netrebko has emphatically condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine:
“I am opposed to this senseless war of aggression and I am calling on Russia to end this war right now, to save all of us. We need peace right now.”
and
“I expressly condemn the war on Ukraine and my thoughts are with the victims of this war and their families. My position is clear. I am not a member of any political party nor am I allied with any leader of Russia.”
This is virtue-signalling and discrimination. Being born Russian is not a crime, and you can hardly blame her for being honoured for her art in her home country pre-war. She is one of the most famous opera singers in the world, of course she has met the president. What do you want her to do? Take up arms against him? Condemning the war should be enough.
I went to a massively off brand LOTR ‘orchestra’ a couple of years ago. The host announced for us to all stand for the ‘Mordor’ national anthem. We all stood expecting da da da dun dun dun…..after a few seconds we all realised they were playing the Russian anthem and the air went out of the room just like that followed by badly composed pieces, no rohhirm, an Irish jig band and terrible AI artwork….oh and a Christopher Lee intro and ending where he said ‘may the force be with you’ he had been dead for years at this point and the interview was clipped that related to his career as a whole 😂💀
