‘Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stressed the importance of “peace” amid global conflicts at a government ceremony in Tokyo.

“We should never repeat the devastation of war. We will never ever make a mistake in choosing the path to take,” Ishiba said.’

Now there’s a guy that understands the phrase ‘Lest we forget’.

I used to live next to a guy who was polish and flew fighters during WW2. Ghandi. Lovely person. He once cut down the conifers that formed the edge of his property and burnt them. It created the most incredible amount of smoke. I remember him when I see bonfires.

Interestingly enough, his next door neighbour at one point before I was born was the professor who at university oversaw one or both of the guys that discovered DNA. His house became a local nursery I went to for a time and had an iron lung next to the sandpit. And the person who lived next door to him was they guy who started some alarm company that apparently produced the ubiquitous hexagonal yellow burglar alarm boxes. He was fucking minted.

      Anyway, RIP Ghandi. Never forget.

I watched a bit on TV. I found it rather sad really.

The Firm was there in force, the veterans (looking remarkably spritely) taking it all in, and a probably very sweaty regimental band playing the usual. Lots of regimental shouting. The venue looked (to me) like an extension of the TeleTubbies Garden. I reflected on what these guys had been through, and despite all odds had survived to see a lot of what they fought for diluted, dissolved, disappeared. Were some of them thinking “was it all worth it?”.

It’s amazing our Muslim king even remembers VJ Day.
