It is almost as if they want to be purposely demolished by Chinese competitors.

      Key points:

      1. Volkswagen ID.3 Pro and Pro S are listed as producing 201bhp, buyers must pay a subscription fee to reach full potential of 228bhp.

      2. Subscription currently stands at £16.50 per month or a lifetime subscription for £649, with this being attached to the car rather than the individual, meaning the upgrade will remain if the vehicle is sold on.

      3. Volkswagen says the performance upgrade does not affect range.

      4. As the car is registered at 228bhp from the factory, owners won’t need to inform their insurance company, either way.

      5. Owners of the Polestar 2 can also purchase a similar performance pack to that of the VW.

      6. BMW and their heated seat subscription also get a dishonourable mention.

VW probably wants the world to know that they are no longer a car for the people (Volks-Wagen) in no uncertain terms…

I’ve always had volkswagen, but just knowing this makes me want to consider other options.

How can you charge a subscription, if I own the freggin’ car? It should be illegal.

The guy down the street who’s good with computers will make a tidy sum jailbreaking cars…

    6. LurkingWeirdo88 on

Just unscrew it open and jailbreak the thing and take it for free.

Apparently, Volkswagen’s top  want to lose everything and then sell it to China.

There is no way I’m willingly pay subscription for the car. If it costs more, that’s fine, but I want to own the car, not to rent the car.

Not surprised about their performance. High prices, crappy design and now this… VW is digging its own grave

This is going to help them immensely fight Chinese competition

Cool, now I can hack my car to get extra horsepower for free

“As the car is registered at 228bhp from the factory, owners won’t need to inform their insurance company, either way”

So if you don’t subscribe you pay extra insurance for bhp you haven’t got.

how to kill your brand: being too open about your greediness

    14. On the one hand this feels like they are trying to milk their customers, on the other hand

      >Owners can also choose to select a lifetime subscription for the grand total of £649, with this being attached to the car rather than the individual, meaning the upgrade will remain if the vehicle is sold on.

So you could just as easily say the car costs X+649 pounds but if you want you can reduce this price a bit and in return a feature is disabled or you can enable it for a monthly payment. I think the most important part is being straightforward about the pricing and not hiding things in fine print.

So you pay insurance for a 228 hp car but can´t uses all the horsies unless you pony up some more cash.

VW certaibly is a funny outfit.

So the guys are literally sabotaging their own company right ?

This shit is the same approach as IBM had (maybe still has) with their Power systems. You buy the lower spec server but they delivered a fully loaded server limited to what you bought. If you need more resources you gotta pay for a license to enable the hw that is already there.

Fucking hate were this is going to.

Got a leases car ( Citroen ) after a year I got to pay to have access to to a number of stuff. Luckily I don’t need it … but is borderline fukced up. Just like with games …

    18. Dead cat jump. The push for short term revenue growth is astonishing. Europe is still behind in terms of stupid ideas that users can subscribe to comparing to the US, but it’s getting close.
