      > The steep rise in the past year has been driven almost entirely by people who are not required to work

What does this mean, not required to work? Can someone explain it to me? Is it people with long term disabilities, etc?

To be expected when they’re moving everybody who remained on legacy benefits onto Universal Credit.

83.8% of which are british. Also these are **claimants** not recipients. Non-story for the anti-immigrant crowd sorry guys.

Universal credit also does small business start up schemes where they will make up to a certain amount dependent on your earnings each month, for up to a year.

Maybe we should measure the number of food bank recipients and the amount of mental health breakdowns and burn outs, and early retirements

Oh no maybe pay people enough to not need government assistance to pay rent or survive

      What a nonsense headline.

The migration of legacy benefits to UC hasn’t ended, which means that as people are moved from tax credits, where the migration only ended this year, and from ESA, which is meant to end next year, then the number of people claiming UC will continue to rise.

Maybe we should have more work programmes? That’s always worked in the past, right? Right guys?

It’s almost as if a few years ago the was a pandemic which caused lots of people to get ill and suffer longer term consequences of that illness and also cause delays in people getting medical diagnosis and treatment for other conditions resulting in long term disability

Why can’t we put everyone on UC and bump taxes a bit to compensate? I feel like people might be more understanding if they also received it (no matter in how small it is relative to income).

Why is it even called universal credit if it isn’t universal credit? Idk.

Quality journalism. Shocking headline and no explanation as to the motive until the end of the article which most people won’t read.

Ran into someone making £4,000 a month from universal credit.

      They were a student.

      This country is fucked.
