Most of the country are probably fine if that sport completely dies off, I don’t think this will have the effect they’re hoping for.

I’m sure you’ll get the usual lot, you know the the ones that also banging on about foxing hunting bans, in the news talking about how this is impacting a great British tradition/businesses/communities/etc

But suspect the majority of people just won’t care, or notice unless they read about it.

    3. topotaul on

Good, tax the shit out of it. People should stop funding this animal abuse.

    4. PeterG92 on

They’re too chickenshit to actually cancel them, they just re-arranged them. Tax it

    5. DireCrimson on

Taxing means we either get more money or we reduce the volume of gambling as people opt out of it. Either way, a good thing.

    6. _HGCenty on

Oh no. Please no. Definitely don’t cancel the races. How sad.

Keep taxing it and it’ll go the way of cigarettes – Treasury revenues will go down because punters prefer the prices on the black market.

You can already bet on horses with crypto, we’d all better hope it takes a while before the vritual hamster racing can be done in crypto too.

Absolute shithole of a so called sport. Tax it into oblivion.

Good. Gambling is shit, and so is horse riding. Ban the second, further restrict the first.

    10. Hopefully the government will come out strong on this along the lines of “gambling is a blight on our society” and “kiss my arse”.

Sadly the gambling industry has purchased respectablility[through large political donations](https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/jun/28/tory-betting-scandal-labour-gambling-industry-regulation?CMP=share_btn_url), so it is unlikely anyone in Westminster will have the fortitude to do what is best for the country as a whole.

Tax them, the government needs the money, it’s a good place to start.

    12. We shouldn’t forget that UK Horse Racing supports 85,000 jobs in the UK

I’ve lived in a place where there’s a famous racecourse nearby. I can guarantee you a LOT of the locals will actually be a fan of this. There’s only so many coked up twats in suits trying to pick fights and stalk women alongside other general sleaze the races bring to the area before you start asking if it’s truly worth it

I don’t get how we now have the “Online Safety Act” to help “children” be protected online. Yet nothing to do with gambling is behind this protection, I get YouTube adverts for every gambling site while watching Minecraft videos, no matter how many times I say block this advert, gambling adverts throughout the day on the radio and tv. When gambling can quite literately impact massively on people’s lives and even cause death in the extreme parts.

      Ok, good?

I don’t particularly like horse racing or any sport that involves potential mistreatment of animals for human entertainment. I know standards now are better than they once were for horses, but you still get them falling, injuring themselves and having to sometimes be killed because somebody wanted a race.

    16. HomeworkInevitable99 on

They are not cancelling, just rearranging.

There is glitter teaching in 363 days a year, but each racecourse is only a free days a year. Each race course will have the same number of meetings, but just avoid 10 sept.

    17. Deep_University_9084 on

Well that’s up to them. Pay the tax. It’s not going to bankrupt them. The biggest threat to horse racing currently is the growth of anti horse racing due to cruelty and death of horses.

    18. After-Dentist-2480 on

      Not sure many people care.

Just goes to demonstrate that horse racing is not sustainable in its own right, and only exists to give the desperate something to bet and lose money on every day.

    19. The-Saucy-Saurus on

Why do so many people seem so upset about the concept of horse racing

    20. Cute_Ad_9730 on

After living in the UK countryside for 50 years I would describe horse owners as one of the most insular and corrupt people I have met. No idea what the dynamic is but it’s not normal.
