Is the best strategy to announce it publicly before the “negotiations”? Europe is such a joke.

How much stretched ? The most stretched ones are very most likely UK and France, i really doubt Germany is on the same level, i know they have 3-4.8k soldiers in lithuania but there are still 30k french soldiers deployed around the world at all times [https://www.defense.gouv.fr/operations/operations-militaires/operational-commitments-of-the-french-armed-forces](https://www.defense.gouv.fr/operations/operations-militaires/operational-commitments-of-the-french-armed-forces), it seems to be around 10k ~ for UK [https://www.gov.uk/government/news/10000-uk-armed-forces-personnel-deployed-overseas-to-keep-us-safe-this-christmas](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/10000-uk-armed-forces-personnel-deployed-overseas-to-keep-us-safe-this-christmas)

These all talks “troops after the end of the war” are only silly appeasement. The war is not going to the end. Ukrainians do not have enough weapons. Sanctions against Russia are still weak. Russian money in EU is not touched. We spend our time with fake debates.
P.S. CDU spent 2 years explaining how badly Ukraine needs Taurus. Now Germany has CDU Chancellor and Taurus are still in Germany.

    4. Cornflake0305 on

Justifying this statement by backing it up with having deployed a single brigade in Lithuania is ridiculous. That’s a force of 4800 troops.

The BW has 180k military staff – obviously not all are combat troops, but that’s more than enough to provide some blocking forces to a multi national mission.

This is just the usual CxU scurrying out of any real responsibility.

    5. Professional_Doggie on

If Europeans are unwilling to protect their own continent, why is it expected that the Americans do so?

    6. lateniteearlybird on

Germany doesn’t seem to understand this. If we continue to be unwilling to get involved militarily, then we will be led around by the nose by the USA, Russia and China and will soon be able to count ourselves as their colony. Without military power, Europe will have nothing to say and will be a supplicant to the Americans.

    7. Definitely_Human01 on

5k out of 182k in Lithuania is stretched too thin?

Germany has always been a land power, and unlike France and the UK, it doesn’t have overseas bases or territories to protect.

I think it’s fair enough if Germany isn’t willing to send peacekeepers, but I feel like they could’ve given a better reason on why they’re against it

    8. Iamoggierock on

Taurus is fine. Crack on. Russia can’t even conquer Ukraine, it’s in no position to go anywhere else.

    9. Heavy_Secret_203 on

We stand with Ukraine, but we actually kinda don’t. It is complicated, but you know, we have elections, and I think we can negotiate. Yeah, negotiations are the way to be, but we aren’t taking part in them too. Oh, well. Stay strong! Thoughts and prayers.

    10. scatterlite on

Everbody knew this wouldn’t happen. Do they not realise that strong rethoric with no intention of following through makes you look extremely weak?

    11. UnMaxDeKEuros on

This is just sad how weak Europe is, if even its largest land power and post populated country cannot/does not want to take part in a deterrent force against Russia.

    12. DefInnit on

They can send the Dutch mechanized brigade that’s integrated with the German Army. Go, Dutchies!

    13. dustofdeath on

      Stretched how?
Are they at war or in conflict with someone?

    14. wolflance1-5 on

AKA the push has come to shove, it is time to find excuse and chicken out.

Don’t laugh at him, I expect other countries will soon follow suit. He’s just the fall guy to open out first and take the flak so others don’t have to endure the embarrassment.

    15. No_Detail9259 on

Starting with the excuses already. Every other country says the same so no troops for ukraine. Whatever.

    16. SpiderDK1 on

It is true, that’s why all this protection guarantees are fake words just to make Ukraine agree on this shitty deal and forget about it. But unfortunately Ukrainians knows russians well enough now, and they know that this shithole will attack again, no matter how many signs and deals were made, only real power can stop russians, and not only in Ukraine, that is why Poland is making good stuff by reinforcing as much as it can.

    17. Any-Original-6113 on

Apparently, Germany can’t be counted on.
      Who’s next?

    18. WhereasSpecialist447 on

to stretched? there are no soldiers in germany lol.

    19. The_Duke28 on

I’m Swiss and I would be totally in favor of our Troops to be sent to Ukraine as some sort of peace-supervision and observer. Our military is a bottomless domestic moneypit and all they do is sit around in the mountains, shooting at imaginary enemies. Sending some of our troops would show our allies that we are willing to be a part of Europe – maybe not as a member of the European Union, but that we are full aware of being a part of this great continent and are willing to do at least something besides speaking hollow words. Like we do/did in Kosovo! Or Bosnia, South Sudan or wherever.

This would at least somewhat cover our european friends’ back.

    20. EbbNervous1361 on

Why not deploy everything Europe has? Are they needed for something else?

    21. Careless-Credit-1463 on

Coming up with excuses already … . Why they even bother to play this whole Coalition of willing game …

    22. AdminEating_Dragon on

Every European country will find an excuse on why it should not be THEIR troops who go to Ukraine…because they still haven’t figured out to make it a popular position for the voters, who are increasingly adopting more and more self-centered positions along the lines of “I don’t care what happens to Ukraine, but it should not be MY country who pays the cost of their independce/sends troops there”.

Poland is also mentioning how they would never contribute troops for any other Eastern country’s defense every time they get asked. Italy is saying the same, Spain a variation of it.

Even the most theoretically willing, France and UK, are munching their words and trying to not appear that they are open to this outcome, because their citizens don’t want it…

    23. Exact-Replacement142 on

Commence the finger pointing and blaming each other. European defense at its best

    24. Beyllionaire on

Most of y’all aren’t reading the article… (no surprise at all here).

But anyway him using Lithuania as an excuse is funny lol. We need each European country to contribute. That way we can send a big army there.

    25. bukowsky01 on

It’s hilarious in a way. First economy and most populous country in Europe is stretched too thin by a few peacetime commitments to deploy a battalion to Ukraine.

But don’t worry, they re definitely ready for serious stuff. Either way, Germany really doesn’t want to deploy troops or the BW readiness is even worse than assumed. Probably both.

    26. hammerk101977 on

This news should cause a stampede to the recruiting station! Lol

    27. everydaystonexdhaha on

stretched too far into capitalism and sitting on your privileged asses to an extend that they probably couldn’t even fight for their own good

    28. Rohen2003 on

As a german this has disgusted me since the beginning of ukraine invasion in 2014. German soldiers bled and died in afghanistan but somehow when europe itself is under attack we somehoe cannot send soldiers???

    29. RollingDownTheHills on

Europe once again backing out of appearing even remotely united or strong. It’s really quite impressive at this stage.

    30. woolcoat on

Any reason why countries like Germany can’t provide additional administrative type support to free up Ukrainians to fight? Idk like outsource entire bureaucracies if you need to.

    31. Tall_Tip7478 on

If the largest European countries can only support a single brigade, can someone explain to me how they think that they’ve been fulfilling Article 3 of the NATO treaty?

    32. Maeglin75 on

I think it should be possible. We did peacekeeping missions before. It doesn’t have to be an entire armoured brigade like in Lithuania.

It just takes some time and effort to prepare for missions like this. This should be started as soon as possible.

    33. Unlikely-Stage-4237 on

The Bundeswehr needs to be restructured. If not it will be a risk.
