WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz credited U.S. President Donald Trump with persuading Russia’s President to agree to a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart.

This meeting, to which Vladimir Putin agreed during a phone call with Trump, would take place at a yet-to-be-determined location, the German chancellor said.

“We don’t know whether the Russian president will have the courage to attend such a summit.
Therefore, persuasion is needed,” said Merz, who was part of a delegation of European leaders who travelled to Washington on Monday to lend support to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

During a break in the meeting, “the American president spoke with the Russian president on the phone and agreed that there would be a meeting between the Russian president and the Ukrainian president within the next two weeks,” he told reporters.

Trump had agreed to extend another invitation to a three-way meeting afterward, so that negotiations could “truly begin”, added Merz.

The German chancellor said Trump was impressed that the Europeans had come with a unified front, and their discussions with the U.S. administration would now turn to details on security guarantees for Ukraine.

“It is absolutely clear that the whole of Europe should participate,” said Merz, praising Trump’s announcement that the United States is also prepared to provide them.

I really think that this could be a trap. Putin is such a evil person… I could imagine, if Zelenskiy and Putin meet in person… Zelenskiy is at risk being murdered. Putin killed so much people in his lifetime… so why should he stop?

I hope some European leaders will be with him to protect him.

So what? They will meet and they will say that they will continue with this. Then Europe will have to pay even more for Ukraine to fight for at least 3-4 years. MAGIC, I know

Change nothing. Appeasement theatre. Security guarantee from Russia means nothing.

The biggest sticking points right now are probably the security guarantees and Putin’s demand for the entire Donbass (which they don’t entirely control).

      Bet, not gonna happen.
If it happens, nothing will change.
Still a push for peace. It’s significant

Would not make any difference, unless Ukraine army is camping on the Red Square. Even if Putin agrees on anything, his words have no value. He doesn’t believe into binding agreements. For him any agreement is to be broken at most opportune moment. The only way for this war to end is regime change in Russia.

The phone conversation between Putin and Trump lasted about 40 minutes, – Ushakov said. Putin and Trump expressed support for direct negotiations between the **delegations of Russia and Ukraine**, Ushakov said. According to him, they discussed the idea of studying the **possibility of raising the level of representatives of Moscow and Kyiv** at the negotiations. There won t be a Putin – Zelensky meeting.
