This is certainly needed to prevent kids doing a workaround. The paid VPNs don’t need it. By supplying a bank card you’ve already proven you’re an adult.

You know, I am actually thankful to the british voters at this point.

At least they made sure that the country that came up with this, won’t hold any voting rights in the EU for the foreseeable future.

About as enforceable as trying to patrol an infinite border, but that’s been the tune for Labour and Tory governments now since time immemorial. Watching politicians try to legislate the internet is like watching someone try to bail out a sinking cruise ship with a thimble.

    4. I didn’t have porn left in bushes making a comeback on my 2025 bingo card but here we are.

    5. Their authoritarianism is about hate, ours is about safety, health and the children. 🤔😐🤡

Officials aren’t supposed to be calling for anything.  They’re supposed to stay out of politics and stick to implementing policy not making it.

Why does it feel the tories and labour are always competing who can be the worst government?

What about age verification for UK officials? Maybe having someone who actually knows what he’s talking about would be useful ..

Reading the article, it’s the Children’s Commissioner, and according to politicians there’s no plans for such a thing.

Tbf, isnt vpns mainly used for privacy? So whats the point then having one, when ud have to verify it anyways? Bunch of bollocks

Not sure how they can enforce that given that many VPNs are overseas. Unless they’re planning on banning VPN.

shoutout to the days when you had to search the whole house for your fathers porn magazine collection ..

..and after this, I suppose people will start using Tor/I2P/Freenet; after which how will the government mandate age verification on a piece of open source software? And these services also provide access to material far worse than what one would find on Reddit or something. Government poking around with something it doesn’t understand and leading people to something far worse than what they were trying to avoid in the first place.

“A government spokesperson told the BBC that there are no plans to ban VPNs, “but if platforms deliberately push workarounds like VPNs to children, they face tough enforcement and heavy fines.””

When will legislation be introduced to prohibit non-medical circumcision of young boys, to *’protect the children’* from irreversible harm?

    16. wowlock_taylan on

This obsession with age verification but of course the politicians themselves are exempt from it!

      They have to be stopped.

Are we still pretending this is about porn and “protecting the children”?
