Also to add as a Greek:Instagram was a mistake.
Atleast you guys aren’t full of creepy nonces fetishising local women
Yet.
Overtourism is an issue, no doubt about that. In large part, it’s caused due to how badly marketed less known destinations are. To my fellow Europeans planning to visit Greece in the future, avoid Mykonos and Santorini. Do your research and ask around. It’s better to go on vacation to a less crowded, way cheaper and often more scenic location than the usual tourist-heavy ones. What sucks is that even Greeks fall into the same trap. I blame social media for that. Flexing your vacations in Mykonos e.t.c. doesn’t “hit the same” when you post stories from a less-known paradise.
The only place, that’s always crowded by tourists that’s worth visiting, is the Acropolis of Athens. Hell, I might extend the same grace to other archaeological sites and museums as well, but these places appeal to a smaller percentage of people than those that are just interested in summer activities.
Greece has slowly became an overpriced vacation destination, the Greeks themselves can’t afford any island on average and even if they do, it costs them so much that they have to plan it months in advance just for a simple 5 day trip, God forbid you want to bring your car with you so you can move around, be prepared to sellout your kidneys
Solution:
No airbnb etc near any major city.
It wasn’t too long ago grecians were desperate for tourists to come and inject some wealth into the country.
Overtourism is a plague and Greeks have let it destroy them for short term gain. This year has been somewhat slow and many in the tourism industry are whining about it. After decades of exponential growth and profits from tourism, a single comparatively slow year threatens many businesses which shows that not only are they not aware of their greed but have also not really been clever with their profits all this time, leaving them vulnerable to a market downside.
Fuck them. Maybe the country needs yet another recession to show people that they should vote for someone with an actual fiscal policy in mind rather than empty promises for short term gains.
isn’t it simply that the Greek government hasn’t done any price capping or regulating corporations, or providing affordable housing for Greeks, or done anything to reduce the cost of living for greeks… Greek Government needs tourism income and wont do anything to jeopardize that…
Seems it always happens with open borders.
Local residents quickly figure out they can charge foreign tourists with stronger currencies more than natives and other citizens subsequently get priced out of spending holidays in their own country.
Globalization baby.
Who is that analogy for?
“Holiday dreams” in Thailand = Red light district? Lol.
Crazy that this is the reality when Greece is being presented as the poster boy for economic turnaround.
OverTourism doesn’t not benefit the working class, it only benefits landlords
Are there also tons of foreign men and local women marrying up then moving away?
Has Greece tried to curb this? Maybe by limiting AirBNBs? Or by limiting cruise ships?
Cities and Regions could limit the number of Hotelbeds, holdiay homes for rent and camping.
They don’t because Eurodollars.
So yeah! Tourism is great.
Crete was very normally priced, almost cheap.
Croatia on the other hand…
