This would be fantastic if HS2 was going somewhere useful for most of the country.

Birmingham to just outside of London is an oddly specific journey.

That is going to be a pretty journey, once it’s possible to actually do. It’s a shame that I and my grandchildren will all be dead before it comes close.

    3. Honestly, it looks stunning.

I think I’m in the minority of those who are ardent supports of HS2 and wish projects of this magnitude were more common. We seem about 20-30 years too late building high speed rail, but I’m glad it’s finally arriving.

Oh great. I can’t wait to stay on the overcrowded west coast like because the HS2 doesn’t reach my area and every single person who goes on my route gets off after crew anyway. HS2 will be useful kappapenis.

All for the bargain price of £18,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 per centimetre.

Unpopular opinion but I’m actually excited for HS2. Everyone loves to dunk on it as a “money pit” but big infrastructure projects are always expensive, especially in a country as crowded and regulated as the UK.

The costs aren’t just “lol politicians wasting cash” it’s a ton of it is stuff people would complain about if it wasn’t done:

Protecting wildlife – tunnels, green bridges, rerouting lines so we don’t bulldoze habitats.

Land + compensation – you can’t just take peoples land without paying them.

Engineering challenges – tunnels under the Chilterns, new stations smack in the middle of cities, tying into existing rail.

Future-proofing – it’s being built to last years, not some quick patch job.

So yeah, the price tag is big, but it’s not like they’re shovelling cash into a hole for the fun of it. It’s just the real cost of doing something this big in the UK without wrecking everything in the process.

It’s cool to hate HS2 right now, but when it’s finally running people I think it’ll be great, and people will enjoy using a brand new train system. As long as people don’t wreck it.
