My father was listening to Prague radio at that time. They were even playing some Western music so it was like a blow of fresh air for soviet youngsters. And on this day music stopped playing and radio became completely silent. Everybody understood that something wrong happened.

Horrific, I’d say that this was one of the darkest moments in the history of our country. I can’t imagine what the people thought back then. How they managed to work up a bit of freedom from the regime, only to get brutally stomped out by the Soviets. By the way, I can really recommend a movie about this called “Vlny” (meaning “Waves”). It’s about the Czechoslovak radio right before the 1968 invasion and their fight against the invasion by spreading information via radio.
