It’s kind of insane that the CAA with regards to airshows are like “it’s too dangerous to perform over the spectators or their vehicles directly, what if the plane crashes” so then allows the planes to fly over major population centers and roads and similar instead which is clearly just as bad if not worse.
It’s also insane the pilot avoided any punishment for this after it was found to be gross pilot error and keeps appealing his flying ban so he can fly again.
Can’t say I blame the families here for being angry.
If a car driver had caused that carnage they would go to jail. Pilot was given a slap on the wrist.
I was there filming the air show. I remember the plane going behind the tree line and a huge fireball. Then the ripple effect of the crowd realising what had happened. We had to keep filming the emergency response and such for evidence for the police. Was a horrible experience. Couldn’t believe the pilot survived!
Most pilots have an extraordinary level of entitlement and unbelievable arrogance. Things I’ve seen and heard astound me. I’ve been an airfield firefighter for the last 12 years. The closest airfield to my base was North Weald where the Hawker Hunter was based. This person is at another level if they have zero remorse about killing people but want to continue to fly.
‘Fatal Flight: Shoreham’ is an amazing documentary on Discovery+ (UK) that pulls zero punches in blaming Andy Hill. I remember the day of the crash as if it was yesterday.
I cannot imagine what the families of the deceased are still going through.
