Wild SF are even considering this. But then again if Mary Lou were to fail surely her own position would be untenable and that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

Easy to spot the FG trolls. One of the usual suspects appearing here.

It’s has to be her to Michelle O’Neill. They haven’t a chance to win otherwise.

Michelle O’Neill would be a brilliant president. Ivan Yates thinks they will run her.

Wonder how she would do in the role, considering it is mostly diplomatic and ceremonial.

Not that the president can’t ever criticise or challenge the government, but that’s not their primary role. It should be rare, and certainly not when representing the Irish state abroad. The president is also not meant to favour any particular political party.

How would she square that circle?

It seems like a convenient way to go if the party wanted to get a new leader and allow a respectable way for Mary Lou to leave the current stage.

Shame Gerry wouldn’t give it a go, am not one for sides but I do like a good laugh and I’d feel it would come in waves with Gerry.

A Gerry v Bertie battle royal would be great craic altogether.

    7. SF would love to unburden themselves of the albatross she’s become and give Michelle a free hand. But ML knows she’d lose the presidential election … and there’s only so much loosing a person can take.

      > Mary Lou McDonald has said she is mulling a possible run at the presidency

Interesting to admit to it yourself since it means you’re thinking of stepping down as leader.

If you win you step down, if you lose you probably also step down because your aura is diminished

Getting tired of the will they/wont they from the parties and politicians, all of them are trying to see what the other parties are up and then decide. They are all waiting to see what bets the other parties are making. It is not like the election is a surprise.

I would support this. For SF to grow as a party, they need a new leader. I like Mary Lou but it’s just the optics.

She’s not failed as a leader in any form, but she hasn’t formed a government the last two elections as leader and another round would likely be the same result.

Pearse or Eoin are no-brainers for replacements. They’re smart and driven. Especially Pearse if they’re serious about a unity referendum. He is a great orator and handles himself very well in debates.

I imagine the hesitation here is she doesn’t want to leave the TD/leader position for something not guaranteed and I can’t really blame her there but I do think she would be a good candidate for the position.
