Nothing says democracy like forced conscription and [beatings](https://busification.org/)

EDIT: for all those keyboard fighters who like to claim that “forced conscription is normal in democracy”

UN Human Rights Committee views denial of providing alternative to mandatory conscription (conscientious objection) as potentially violating freedom of thought, conscience, and religion (ICCPR Art.18)

Additionally, the European Court of Human Rights (aka the Strasbourg Court) requires the presence of such alternatives in all Council of Europe states (Bayatyan v. Armenia, 2011), *which Ukraine is part of*

So yes, it’s not legal according to international law. *Even after turning a blind eye* on [press gangs and beatings](https://busification.org/), which clearly violate basic human rights

Serious Q: Given the vast majority of new recruits in the Ukrainian army are placed in the Infantry because it has the highest casualty rates and given the life expectancy for infantry is….not great would it even be legally possible for an EU nation to force someone to go to Ukraine?

As I recall one of the key aspects preventing someone being deported to a nation is if there is a reasonable likelihood of them being harmed. There seems to be ample evidence to make this point.

This may be the ugliest part of war. Im not saying conscription is bad or good but we’ve all seen the videos and they are not an easy watch, seeing a mother hold onto there son as they are dragged off to war. Thats a tuff watch.

    4. After Napoleonic wars when mass armies appeared, there are only two ways to fight: mercenaries (what Russia is doing now) and conscripts (what Ukraine is doing now).

In all senses, it’s much better to have a mercenary army than a conscript army, with one huge drawback: mercenaries cost money. A lot of money. And if you don’t have money to pay – like Ukraine doesn’t – then conscripts are the only option.

russian propaganda bots and tankies will be drooling over this.

As if every nation defending itself would have conscription.

It’s weird to see reddit neckbeard saying that people not wanting to fight should do so, quite a sad state.

Novay gazeta is a russian media, even if they are considered to be opposing Putin. What I want to say is that they have no say in how we remedy what their shitty country started. The case in point is valid, I agree that it is awful. Still, they have no right to tell Ukrainians how to survive. No russian does.

This business of forced conscription is an ugly but necessary part of war unfortunately. You just can’t have your cake and eat it.

Ideally you would have either no mobilisation or full mobilisation not this partial conscription which tends to be seen as unfair and where you end up with a lot of people who don’t want to pull their weight. On the other hand the economy and the country need to keep going and I understand why they can’t afford a full mobilisation. At the same time, if you are an exhausted front line vet, would you want to serve next to a guy who tried to avoid being conscripted and clearly doesn’t feel like being there?

Who should defend Ukraine then, if not able bodied Ukrainians?

The most reliable, unbiased source of information of course!

    11. No one should be forced to fight for a nation if they don’t want to.

Why doesn’t the Ukrainians that left for Europe/US and keep supporting the war…don’t return and join the front?

Should be relevant to the convo: novayagazeta, the name of the website, means “new newspaper” in russian, just so that people understand who spreads these news.
