      Is this America?

Are we perhaps talking about Crossovers here?

We don’t really get supersized SUVs here because they don’t fit on our roads. BMX X7 is probably the biggest? But it has 7 seats which some families need and it’s no bigger than a van with 3 rows of seats. Plus all these new cars have the sensors and radar that detect pedestrians in front of the car. In reality I’ll never have a need to buy one so I don’t care if they get taxed more.

For city folk yes, country dwellers no. No need for a gwagon in Dublin but a farmer in roscommon shouldn’t be paying extra to drive a beater of a landcruiser.

Stop trying to regulate us by levies. We are up to our neck in levies.

If they’re dangerous, ban them. If they’re not dangerous, leave them alone.

    5. fedupofbrick on

Some roads aren’t even big enough for them. They are completely unnecessary cars

    6. No we shouldn’t have a levy…

We should have regulations that ban heavy high fronted vehicles for non-commercial use.

A levy just means the rich are given a greater right to drive the child crushers.

The American pickup trucks are a bigger issue. I’ve seen a few around Dublin and they’re gargantuan with a very high grill, which coupled with their weight and size makes them extremely dangerous, especially around suburbs where I spotted them.

      > It’s not a tax on SUVs. It’s a tax on the smug and on people we don’t like.

This line in this article encapsulates the argument for most of the anti-SUV crowd many you get on this sub.

It they’re more dangerous, they should just be banned. We’ve been better off as a whole without them. Big stupid looking things.

Is tax based on the number of pedestrians killed? What about if my model of vehicle has advanced features that has meant no pedestrians have been killed with it? Or is there another reason people pick out this type of car? Buses and trucks are obviously less safe to be run over with, if a pedestrian. Are they ok or to be taxed higher. Maybe they are seen as utilitarian and so allowances are to be made but then who is judging the utility of a larger personal vehicle? Perhaps someone has more kids, or wheelchairs or something else that makes the larger car useful to them.
Maybe we should just build good public transportation and increase road charges for all personal transportation vehicles.

We have to honestly ask ourselves..do we need large SUVs enough to outweigh the increased risk to children, pedestrians and cyclists?

A recent systematic review and meta analysis of 600,000 collisions showed children were 82% more likely to be killed if struck by an SUV or LTV.
The likelihood of a pedestrian or cyclist being fatally injured is 44% higher if they are hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) or light truck vehicle (LTV-covers SUVs/small vans and pick up trucks) compared with smaller passenger cars.

Make cars even more expensive, despite the extortionately high vat, vrt etc already. Great logic.

I can’t understand the agenda against SUVs, really seems to be driven by jealousy. I drive upwards of 40000km a year, never have a problem with bigger cars wherever I am. Cities, towns etc. It’s the shitbox 1L polo’s, micras and yaris that are a danger on the road, typically driven by old people that got their licences in the post or novices that are petrified to drive at the speed limit

Though I don’t expect any less from here. And by the way, the 3.2 ford ranger is a gorgeous car – change my mind. 🤣

    13. Banania2020 on

So as I understand, the oversized EV’s, like Volvo EX90, BMW iX and Kia EV9, just to name a few, will be exempted???

    14. One quick look at the average Irish road should be enough to settle this debate. Ban them.

    15. bigvalen on

Add a momentum limit to the speed limit. If you don’t have a commercial licence, the speed limit of any vehicle over 2 tonnes should be lower.

Unfortunately, this is now almost all electric vehicles, as batteries are heavy.

    16. Such_Bass8088 on

Generally the people who want to ban them are the people who can’t afford them, “if i can’t afford one then you can’t have one either “ kinda attitude

We need to tackle their blinding LED headlights tilted directly into the eyes of oncoming traffic.

A new licence. Make all the shites go back and do their test again.
