      Fianna Fáil’s leadership, including Micheál Martin and senior figures, are firmly against former taoiseach Bertie Ahern running as the party’s presidential candidate. Instead, former Dublin football manager Jim Gavin is being considered a strong potential candidate. Ahern, currently abroad, has not commented.

      When the findings of the Mahon Tribunal were published Michael Martin said quite firmly that Bertie would have to be expelled from the party. I’m sure all TDs from the time that remain in office today echoed something similar.

      I don’t see how FF walk the tightrope of nominating Bertie without taking some major body blows as a party.
