Yes, please. Best idea of the year. She is clearly the best fit for the job (job being anything but president of the commission).

Look, the best case scenario is that she resigns to run in the election, loses the election, and is stuck without anything to ruin.

Since the German president has no real power but is mostly representative, she could do less harm overall. On the other hand, we should really stop promoting politicians to new positions just to get rid of them.

No, she should resign and after that be put in prison for deleting evidence

Although “run… in the election” is technically correct, it is more of an appointment because it’s not a direct vote by the people and rather an election by elected officials who discuss and agree on who they vote for before nominating a candidate.

Sommer holiday in Germany. Spiegel has troubles with topics. Election is in 2027. Still long way to go.

Tbh, I don’t see it happening. According to multiple reports she is one of a couple of possible candidates that are considered. She would loose nearly half of her term and Kanzler Merz an important German partner since the possible predecessor wouldn’t be German anymore.

That’d be great. She would not be a good German president, but she can do more damage as EU commission president

Looks like damage control. Resign instead of “fired” and use this as a pretext

    10. Hmmm… That opens up a seat in Brussels? Maybe we could let Mette Frederiksen fail upwards again!

It’s an opinion piece that says some people in CDU say she might.

The title is both editorialised and misleading.

The obvious question here is, why exactly would she do this? The German President is a ceremonial figurehead with no power.

    13. Viriato181 on

Yes, please. Accept her as a candidate. Then don’t vote for her. Win win for both.

    14. As a German I approve this. Our President is mostly ceremonial, while at the commission she can do real harm. Maybe that is why Draghi has been lobbying again? I’d prefer him if he replaced von der Leyen but anyone with a spine and maybe some vision/skill would be preferable.

nobody really likes her. the reason she’s the eu’s problem now is to get rid of her. people say at least.

Realistically, can we do better than von der Leyen as president of EU commission? It’s going to be someone from the EPP no matter what. I guess there’s Draghi, but I really wouldn’t want von der leyen to be pushed out until the progressives have a plan to unite behind a decent candidate.

      Can’t stop laughing.

She’ll be to the Afd what Hindenburg was to the Nazi Party. Could be beneficial as she’ll stand in the way to the horrors that they’ll inflict upon Germany

Good way to kill the CDU. Ulla is incredibly unpopular last time I checked.

Atleast she may do a good job as President of Germany compared to her current role.
