I’m going to say that this is way, way, underestimated.

Headline is misleading. “Unsolved” implies even the slightest bit of effort was put in to solving them, they’re plain “ignored” by the police, who are too busy dealing with their stations being shut down and support staff cut.

I think most people have almost no faith in the police to do pretty much anything useful these days.

A big supermarket in a rough area could get 200 a day let alone a whole city

People will loudly state how low crime is, yet most people will see petty crime regularly and there is a strong feeling a lot of it is just ignored. I think there is a growing sense of lowkey lawlessness so you get a group determined to insist the UK has never had it so good and many others who feel lied too.
I dont think either is totally right or totally wrong, but I do think the feeling all over our society of being constantly lied too is a big part of the people turning to populism and “out there” solutions, we just dont trust the mainstream.

if you check the numbers, this just means its less produce the companies have to throw away for being over the sell by date.. realistically its a non issue. unsavoury and distasteful ? sure .. but the end of the world ? doubt it.
