The Tories and Farage have been ranting about leaving the ECHR for years. It’s about time someone pointed out it’s impossible because of the GFA.

    2. Careless_Main3 on

Credit to the original negotiators but the GFA is tied to the ECHR which has undergone an evolution in its interpretation over the years, which has effectively de facto mandated mass immigration and reduced the ability of a state to meaningfully control its borders. It’s not something the negotiators could had predicted but it’s where we are now. Expecting England to continuously tolerate that in favour of the precise wording of the GFA isn’t realistic. A simple renegotiation of the ECHR component of the GFA shouldn’t be treated as being dismissive of the GFA’s intentions.

Who’s he going to renegotiate it with? Sinn Féin? Brilliant, I’d love to see that. The british establishment are doing in 10-15 years what various iterations of the IRA couldn’t achieve in nearly 100 years, the destruction of northern ireland as a political entity

Reads like Farage essentially admitting his hot air about scrapping participation in the ECHR is a no-hoper, but immediately front loading the scapegoat he’ll use for his inevitable failure if he becomes PM..

And these are the kin our Ulster compatriots would lump their lot in. Every time I hear a socially conservative English politician opine on NI, it’s with a degree of obvious distaste and disinterest in the province.

Who gives a fiddler’s fuck what that cheap, greasy frog-faced conman has to say. He’s the pound-shop trump, a petty hack with no clue about politics and whose only skill is separating his gammon followers from their money.

Where’s Claire Byrne when you need her to put this muppet back in his box.

This muppet is just a populist racist.

He says things that aren’t even populist because some smooth brained groups of idiots might vote for him.

      Unfortunately there seems to be

      A) more smooth brained groups around these days

      B) bunny brained people don’t bother to fact check anything

      Or

C)A lot more racists than Micheal
Jackson’s “black or white” song said there was

Edit – I type with toes apparently

Why do they have to leave the ECHR? Can’t they just ignore rulings they don’t like? Many EU countries have.

Remember when we laughed at the idea of the UK voting for Brexit?

      This gobshite is dangerous.

Seems fine to me. If the GFA is the one hurdle to them leaving the ECHR, we should assist them by all means necessary. Either they leave, or they just begin ignoring it.

This doesn’t mean we can’t both benefit though, we would be more than happy to ensure no refugees cross the sea by also taking customs and border control of all of the ports on the island of Ireland in this renegotiated agreement. I’m sure there are other little things we can treaty over as well so they don’t have to deal with such a pesky and permeable border.

The kind of people voting for him don’t care about the GFA or NI

    12. APinchOfTheTism on

So, I am sensing a pattern here.

      He wants to scapegoat immigrants.

He refers to some abstract agreement (The EU, Good Friday Agreement, ECHR) that most people don’t know anything about, and says that if that agreement is gone / changed, then everything will be great again.

Generally looks to appeal to the worst in people, stokes fear, to try to get elected, while can’t actually run anything.

And yet, our glorious ‘Irish Patriots’ drape the Union Jack around their shoulders with pride when bullying asylum seekers.

      Coollock says no (surrender)!
