I wonder how they’ll pay for this tax. I certainly can’t imagine it’ll have a knock on impact on tenants.

UK ~~landlords~~ **tenants** could face increase in rents from tax rises that may raise £2bn

    3. lukehebb on

This will just get rid of more small-time landlords and lead to more property being purchased by large companies instead

    4. Oh joy, looks like my rent along with everyone else’s is going up 20% sometime soon.

    5. KernowKermit on

Don’t worry everyone, I’ve done some complex economic analysis and this definitely won’t make rents go up. And even if it does, we’re going to build some lovely new council houses 4 miles from town on an old reclaimed sewage works, and you can get on the waiting list right now. Sleep easy, the government will look after you.

Well, this is kinda fair enough.

However there is zero chance this won’t be passed on via rent rises.

Landlords are about to absolutely hammered by the upcoming epc rules, I’d doubt some houses can even be brought up to the required level.

More small time ones will sell up and large corporations will be waiting.

All an 8% tax on rental income does is increase everyone’s rent by 10%.

Just like how increasing employer NI supressed pay increases and cut back on jobs.

Labours pledge not to raise taxes on working people was naïve at best and duplicitous at worse.

Wait, they’re not taxed right now!?? Tenants and people who are trying to buy homes are treated like shit. It is because of decades of both major parties pandering to selfish, greedy Boomers who have built property empires to fund unearned decades of retirement.

Good, anything that discourages being a landlord and increases housing stock is a good policy.

I wonder how this would be implemented in practice. An increasingly large proportion of private rental housing is owned through ltd companies for liability and tax purposes, with some landlords even going so far as to do 1 company per property.

Large corporate landlords already pay NI on the salaries of the people working for them, so this would probably impact them essentially not-at-all.

Small single member ltd companies typically pay their owners through a combination of PAYE income and dividends to minimise tax – I imagine this would involve paying NI on both parts rather than just the PAYE part. For rental income without a corporate intermediary, I suppose you could charge NI fairly easily.

I think this is funny because this if you levy NI on all the same income sources as are subject to income tax you’re just doing the Tory policy of getting rid of NI and rolling it into income tax with extra steps.

Really? The government skinning the poor people again, as renters are generally the “poorer” because they don’t have enough money to buy. And costs will be passed on.

And it’s supposed to be a leftist government.

      >The proposals are centred on the expansion of national insurance to include rental income, which is currently exempt from the levy

Fucking wild landlord were ever exempt in the first place. With Tory policies like this no wonder the housing market was fucked.

    13. This Government hasn’t got a clue about the challenges facing people trying to secure housing. They deserve to be struggling in the polls

Just stop poor landlords from being landlords. If you NEED the tenants rent to pay the mortgage, you can’t afford to be a landlord

The issue we face the banks have played landlords and tenants against eachother for their profit. If people weren’t allowed to rent out houses that they still had 75% left to pay, rents wouldn’t have been skyrocketing for the poor unfortunate landlords to cover the mortgage of their 2nd, 3rd, 4th home.

    15. MetalChaotic on

A friend of mine had rent raised this year already by 10%. This is just gonna steal more of his disposable income.

*Government closes tax loophole that stops Landlords having to pay tax*

Reddit for some reason: ‘How fucking dare they’

    17. terrordactyl1971 on

Stupid Labour. This just means higher rents and/or less properties available as more landlords just sell up

    18. GuyLookingForPorn on

You know the right has finally won when all the comments are against closing tax exemptions for the wealthy. Landlord having to pay tax like a normal person should not be controversial.

    19. ReadThisInABadAccent on

I understand as you say the tax will likely be passed onto tenants, but what is a better way to discourage landlords buying up a lot of property and hiking up prices?
I guess rent control would definitely be up there. Zoned rent control

    20. CaptH3inzB3anz on

Cost passed on to the tenants.

Well done Labour, what else can to tax us on???

    21. British_Historian on

If it doesn’t come with limit on rent hikes you may as well not bother… Well unless the plan is to make renting unaffordable so everyone is homeless for a few months while landlords scurry to sell all their unrentable properties… Feels like there’s an easier way to do that.

    22. There’s a lot of discussion around fairness in the UK political discourse which I think applies here.

Why tf should a landlord not be paying the same taxes on rent as I do on actually-productive work?

    23. Jakes_Snake_ on

Most landlord pay 900£ a year in voluntary national insurance to get their state pension.

Came here to munch popcorn and salt it with landlord tears.
