People must have such strong reaction to migrants who cross the channel because when they see a headline “800,000 migrants entered the UK last year”, they think 400,000 of them came on small boats. If this is the figure I’d be mad too!
(except it’s less than one tenth of that)
Not really a surprise. Those who are strongly opposed to immigration aren’t known for their media literacy skills.
If we stop the boats, there’s still 96% of immigration to “deal” with, if you believe it needs dealing with rather that it being the only thing keeping our aging population afloat.
Quote from the article:
“Of the 8,055 UK adults approached for the poll, 47% said they believe there’s more illegal immigration rather than legal – including 32% who said the illegal figure is “much higher”.
The trouble is the number of undocumented people who arrive into the UK via so-called illegal means, like crossing the English Channel in a small boat, is actually dwarfed by the number of arrive legally.
According to the Home Office, there were 44,125 irregular arrivals in the year to March, 86% of whom arrived on small boats.
That works out to be just 4% of the 948,000 overall number who immigrated to the UK during the same period.
YouGov also found that among the respondents who support mass deportations, 93% were in favour of removing small boat migrants – but that number dropped to 44% when asked about migrants who come to the UK legally looking for work.
That proportion declined further to just 26% of respondents when asked about their support for deporting foreign students.
This suggests the confusion around immigration could be pivotal to addressing anti-immigration sentiment, especially as hostile protests have been springing up around English hotels believed to be housing asylum seekers this summer.”
How much would you support or oppose admitting no new migrant, but allowing those already here to remain:
Total support 32%
Total oppose 54%
How much would you support or oppose admitting no new migrants and requiring large numbers of migrants who come to the UK in recent years to leave
Total support 45%
Total oppose 44%
How much would you support or oppose a large decrease in the number of new migrants allowed to come to the UK, but still allowing some migrants to come:
Total support 56%
Total oppose 32%
The data is interesting with big discrepancies between those who support the current model of immigration compared with those who don’t. What’s clear is that the majority would be in favour of a complete restructure to immigration policy, likely reflecting tougher measures to curb illegal immigration and one that utilises more selective methods for entry. Likely based on a merit-based system, that takes into account economic and social integration potential.
We had protests about “illegal immigrants” being housed in a local hotel. I simply asked the question, on the local FB group, How can they be illegal if they are being housed by the government? I never got an actual answer.
People are saying why are there 1m more immigrants in Britain in than period for one year. One. Million. Immigrants. That’s why Reform are getting votes but the main parties are too deaf to listen. If you don’t give the voting population what they want then you don’t get the votes. People want immigration to stop. Whether that’s right or wrong doesn’t matter. It’s the single issue vote that will crush Labour at the next election.
The missing piece of the puzzle though is overstays. The home office can’t tell you how many there are, because they’re awful at monitoring visa use and in general, but it’s usually estimated to be anywhere between 0.5m-1.5m people or about 10% of people born out the country or about 1 in 100 people you meet. I mean it’s nowhere near the level of legal migrants *but* that kind of massive statistical uncertainty due to bureaucratic incompetence doesn’t un-muddy the waters!
I am not against immigration. If people want to come here and contribute to society, then who am I to argue.
I am not in favour of the boats, as it is stupidly dangerous.
Evergreen article https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/british-public-wrong-about-nearly-everything-survey-shows-8697821.html
People can’t believe that so many people can enter the UK legally with no skills. It probably never occurred to most people that until recently you could get a skilled worker visa to be “manager” of a small takeaway or “manager” of a petrol station. Or that some students have children and later get legal leave as a parent of a child. Most people are unaware how many unskilled people came as care workers and care worker dependents.
Even people who are pro migration have fundamental misunderstandings about how things work. One guy on here insisted skilled workers don’t get ILR. Others think that it was very hard and expensive to get a skilled worker visa and no one would ever sponsor people falsely.
Think its more that people didnt have a clue on how many people the tories allowed to come legally.
