“It would shift the tropical rainfall belt on which many millions of people rely to grow their food, plunge western Europe into extreme cold winters and summer droughts, and add 50cm to already rising sea levels.”
And this stems from Prof. Rahmstorf himself. The Gandalf of climate science…

> It would shift the tropical rainfall belt on which many millions of people rely to grow their food, plunge western Europe into extreme cold winters and summer droughts, and add 50cm to already rising sea levels.
Concerning the cooling, it is a misrepresentation based on the idea that the temperate climate of western Europe is due to the AMOC, which is an oversimplification. The difference between North America and Western Europe is mainly due to (1) the west -> east wind regimes and (2) the presence of the Rocky Mountains west of NA that forces a northwest -> southeast wind regime, and the presence of the Atlantic Ocean west of Europe that, on the contrary, increases the temperature inertia in WE.
A cooling effect would likely be limited to Ireland, Scotland, and Norway, but it won’t be enough to counterbalance global warming in the rest of Europe (especially accounting that Europe is warming twice as much as the mean).
Tldr: AMOC shutdown should not make us think we will be exempt of warming.
