On 31 August 1980, the Gdańsk Agreement was signed between striking workers at the Lenin Shipyard, led by electrician Lech Wałęsa, and Poland’s communist government. This compromise ended a wave of nationwide strikes and allowed the creation of Solidarity (Solidarność), the first independent trade union to be recognised in a Warsaw Pact country. Within months, Solidarity grew into a mass social movement with nearly 10 million members, challenging the authority of the communist state and laying the groundwork for democratic change in Eastern Europe.

I am so glad that Poland was able to fight and win against soviets occupation. Despite of no support from West Europe.

August 26th, 2005 marked a pivotal moment for the Solidarność syndicate.

Its founder **Lech Wałęsa** requested from French electronica wizard **Jean-Michel Jarre** to conceive and perform a special musical event at the historic Lenin shipyard: «Freedom Space».

The French musician and his crew were joined by the University of Gdańsk Choir and the Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra, located behind the main stage in one of the shipyard halls. The performances included well-known works by Jarre, as well as new pieces composed especially for the occasion, titled the “Gdańsk Suite.” The piece featured excerpts from Jacek Kaczmarski’s song “Mury” (eng. Walls), which served as the unofficial anthem of Solidarność in the 1980s.
