The EU is willing to negotiate a better, mutually beneficial trade deal with Britain, one of Brussels’ most powerful conservatives has said.
Manfred Weber is president of the influential centre-Right European People’s Party (EPP), which counts 13 prime ministers among its membership, including Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor.
Mr Weber, the centre-Right Bavarian MEP who leads the largest group in the European Parliament, was once a fierce critic of Brexit.
However, he told The Telegraph the EU’s Brexit war with Britain was over, in a sign that Sir Keir Starmer could push for a renegotiation of the reset deal agreed in May.
The Government will be cautious about any concessions the EU could seek after the bloc previously cautioned Britain against any “cherry-picking” – attempting to gain the benefits of single market membership without the obligations.
In the reset deal, Sir Keir agreed to follow EU rules, aligning with European food standards and submitting to the European Court of Justice in exchange for the freedom to export goods with fewer customs checks.
“With this change of government [Labour taking power], the whole Brexit saga was closed,” Mr Weber said in Berlin.
Pressed on how he viewed Brexit now, he said: “In this moment of time, it’s full respect for the decision. It is like it is.
“I think nobody today is stronger than we were before. That’s my assessment. But it is like it is.”
He added: “What I want to see is to close this debate, not to discuss the future with the emotions of the past.
“That is what I would love to see. And I think Starmer was the man who did this, and to make the restart with Brussels pragmatically and look for solutions.”
Asked if the Brexit war was over, he replied: “Definitely.”
This year’s deal with Brussels also included a defence pact, a 12-year fishing deal and a pledge to align with EU plant and animal health rules.

Nah leave it as is for another decade or two. Strengthens our negotiating position immensely.

We need a very close UK-EU relationship and with Starmer in the government and a majority of Brits regretting Brexit, it seems to be good momentum to deepen it. The main point for not giving UK a good Brexit deal back then was that it would discourage eurosceptics in other countries from trying something similar and afaik leaving the EU is not popular in any country right now after the chaos of Brexit.

Labour, this is your chance to save the elections! Give at least some points to the pro-EU part of the population. You need those votes!

Just rejoin EU. Nothing that UKIP promised came true.
UK is not a freeer country, it is not a more prosperous country economically, it hasn’t fixed illegal immigration, it hasn’t reduced legal immigration (and it can’t, and it shouldn’t, but I digress), it hasn’t fixed the issue of Islamic radicalization, it hasn’t fixed “woke degeneracy” or made UK more traditional (and it can’t).
What exactly did it accomplish apart from advance the divide-and-conquer strategy of Russia?

Nigel Farage must be salivating right now. If that deal happens, it’s his election campaign served in a silver platter.

I would rather Britain ’reworks’ Brexit personally, but reworking the EU Brexit deal is a start I guess. Britain should be within the EU in my opinion and helping build a strong union of like minded, democratic nations.

Negotiate a new (possibly better deal) and let the people vote to whether we accept it or not.

Given the dystopian 1984 trial the UK is having right now i’d rather we have absolutely NOTHING at all with them, the fact their incredibly autocratic “laws” are seeping into the EU (see chat control) is incredibly dangerous for any citizen of the EU and his freedoms…

Labour have rules out the four freedoms and a bunch of dynamic alignment, so the uk doesn’t have much room to renegotiate in the way he suggests.
They are too worried about reform, who are shockingly ahead in thr polls.

Nah, leave it as it.
After all, Prime Minister Nigel Farage will tear up the current deal in a few years, so no reason to waste energy on negotiating anything that will last a few months tops.

As someone who thinks Brexit was a moronic thing to do, I wish we could go back to how it was.
The only cool thing about it is I get to have stamps in my passport… Everything else about it sucks. The UK did not become greater, we didn’t all of a sudden have an extra 350 million pounds to put into the NHS. Everything ukip and now reform are saying is all BS. Literally just pandering to the racists of the UK and the elderly
This timeline fucking sucks.

Guess the EU can see Farage is odds on to win the next UK general election. That would likely draw the UK closer to the USA.
This is is an attempt to pull in the other direction.
Will be interesting to see how this ends up

That was always an option. Remember, the sticking point was that the UK wanted to have its cake and eat it at the same time (not be bound by the EU but have member privilage)
If the UK is willing to compromise I don’t see why the EU wont.
