A minor but important detail: Evagoras Pallikarides was not from Paphos the town, but from the mountain village of Tsada in the Paphos district. He did go to high school in Paphos, though.

The entire Paphos district claims him as their regional hero because Paphos the district was always rather rural and with its own regional peculiarities, while the town of Paphos itself was the second smallest of the 6 main ones, surpassing only Keryneia. By extension, even someone from a village like Tsada would be recognized as a Paphitis. This incidentally is also why president Makarios had its more firm supporter base in Paphos, as he hailed from another mountainous Paphos village (Pano Panagia).

Pafos FC the modern club is treading along this line of thinking as well, intending to represent not just Paphos the city, but the entire district (since one of the merged clubs is from the village of Kouklia). The intent was to create a local competitive team which the Paphos district lacked, as opposed to Limassol, Larnaka, Famagusta, and Nicosia.
