In the US, ever since the iPhone 14 family, Apple’s smartphones have lacked a physical SIM card slot, instead relying on eSIM. The company hasn’t removed the physical slot anywhere else so far, but that may change with the iPhone 17 generation.

Retail employees at Apple Authorized Resellers across the EU are required to complete a training course related to iPhones with eSIM support by September 5. That timing is telling since the iPhone 17 launch event is taking place only four days later on September 9.

So this could very well mean that Apple has removed the physical SIM card slot from the iPhone 17 models that will be sold in the EU as well, hence the need to train retail employees to deal with eSIM activations.

They already did this for the latest iPads, so I guess this is logical..

I’ve tried e-sim tech once and it was a genuinely terrible experience.

The EU won’t regulate this. Will let Apple get away like they did with the App Store/sideloading situation through a loophole.

e-sims are fine as long as your phone doesn’t break. E-sims are great for temporary travel usage. But when your phone breaks and you need to use a replacement phone, moving the physical sim over to the new loaner or temp phone is so much easier than moving the e-sim.

Activating an e-sim when you’re not in your home network, or if you do not have access to another device or wifi can also be difficult.

So, E-sims are great unless they’re not. Physical sims are fiddly, but they always work – unless apple remove their slot of course. Then they’re also useless.

eSim largely means less options for consumers and the continuation of Servitization and Dematerialization of the things we use.

It’s risky to let companies run everything through software.

    7. I worked at a company that makes eSIM software. All mobile operators are testing it — if they don’t support it yet, they will once Apple releases an eSIM-only phone.

That’s a pity – that was quite convenient to keep own esim card and put local normal sim while outside of the EU.

Edit: apparently in the US iPhone you can keep up to 8 esims and actually use 2 esims at the same time, which I guess is fine

      Good.

Bind the SIM to the IMEI and or MAC of the MoDem and that’s that.

This should prevent more plastic waste than banning straws.

Doubt. EU is very diverse when it comes to mobile network operators, not all of them support eSIM.

Apple probably has a lot more leverage over network operators in the US than they have anywhere else in the world, hence why they got away with removing the physical slot on US phones.
