To get the obvious thing out of the way:

No, legal tender doesnt work that way and Scottish banknotes arent legal tender anyway.

And Wetherspoons are hardly the only place that doesn’t accept them. Nowhere accepts English £50 notes either.

Banks don’t cash them any differently as far as I’m aware.

Worked in a supermarket helpline and you’d have to phone stores to tell them to screw the nut, was never given a reason that wasn’t debunked easily.

Once worked for Halifax, part of Bank of Scotland back in the day.

A gentleman once came in to complain that the bus station cafe wouldn’t accept his Scottish £20 note. As part of Bank of Scotland, he wanted me to force the cafe to take his money. I apologised and explained it wasn’t under our control and I had no authority over them. I offered to swap his note for an English note, but he refused on principle. In the end, he insisted I put it in writing that I couldn’t make the cafe change it’s policy, because he was adamant I was making things up and just didn’t want to help him..

      🤷😂

I remember working in burgerking in Edinburgh princes street during a Scotland England rugby match. It was heaving and I had served a lady who I think by her accent was from Lancashire.

Any way gave her change of a tenner which contained a £5 note (remember when you could get change from a tenner which included a fiver?) She asked if I could exchange it for an English note, when I looked in the till they were all Scottish notes and she went off her nut at me saying that it was ridiculous and we were supposed to be a United Kingdom.

My manager was from NI and went through her like a dose of the sh1ts. She didn’t back down.

As a foreigner, how can a states money be legal tender in some regions but not others?

What’s the legal framework here to allow this?

    7. How often do you see Scottish notes outside of Scotland? Cash usage in general is on the decline and has been for some time.

Its far easier for Wetherspoons to say ‘no we don’t accept them’ than it is to ensure that training is in place for their 40+ thousand employees for notes that most of them will ever come across.

I grew up in Scotland but have lived in England for the last seventeen years (Manchester/Leeds). In all that time I’ve only ever received one Scottish bank note and that was from my local builders merchant who clearly saw an opportunity to get rid. I went to Scotland shortly after the new notes were issued and when given one as change I had no idea if it was genuine or not.

That’s the issue they really aren’t common. English banknotes in Scotland are but not vice versa – or maybe only in Blackpool, the borders etc.

    9. Who’s still paying for pints in cash? Stop it, you’re slowing the whole bar down.

    10. This would have annoy me if I hadn’t worked at the airport and seen Bank of Ireland notes and I now understand why Scottish note are a hassle.

I’ve had places in England give me stuff for free after trying to pay with Scottish notes

In case I ever get a Scottish banknote, I shall make a point of never visiting a Wetherspoons again.

Oh, I already have that point in operation for many years. Ah well, no loss.

I’m a Store Manager in retail and some of these fakes are really good. Some of them can only be identified by the colouring under UV lights.

Imagine the argument I had when I worked in a hospitality venue that didn’t even accept English money.

The number of people (including a police officer) who are so confidently incorrect on what legal tender actual means is scary. Also one of the reasons why we took payment before any beer was poured unlike most bars.

Everytime i come back from a trip to Scotland i always get funny looks in England when trying to ‘launder’ my Scottish bank notes. Never really understood this seeing as they have “sterling” printed on them.

I get retailers need to be cautious though – everyone is on the take now with something scammy.

    16. windmillguy123 on

I didn’t think anyone with taste or a brain still went to a Wetherspoons anyway?

Perfect, that means hopefully they will leave Scotland soon
