Clearly they wished to reenact the seal hunt like they read about in an tOileánach.

How do we fix stupid, I muse without expecting to find an answer. Sometimes it feels like all we can do is look on and experience the woe. Even being at the scene probably wouldn’t help anything. You might talk some sense into this one fella, but it’s like whack-a-mole. The stupid just pops up in 10 other places.

Where’s the beachmaster?! The very aggressive dominant male. We need him to go for this eejit.

When I was in Yellowstone had a fun chat with a ranger, week before a lad pulled up close to a mama and grizzly and her cub and got out, luckily the mama was used to morons, did a small charge but turned around and left. The ranger rushed up to him and asks why he got out so close despite ALL the signs everywhere saying 100 yards or more, guy says he was closer than that when he stopped so he didn’t get think the rule applied any more. People are morons. Saw another eejit walk right up to a buffalo and pat it on the head. That trip really knocked my faith in humanity.

Has been a problem for decades unfortunately. If you see this and are brave enough to call out the behaviour please do. The opw can’t enforce it out there without manning someone on the island – not gonna happen. The island caretakers are normally busy with the hostel in the tourist season which is too far from the beach to intervene anyway.
What is gained from disturbing wilflike like this? Sanctuaries like this need to be protected more.

If they had a camera and were just trying to get closer but not too close to scare them, then I get it – “oops got too close my bad guys”. This is just stupid childish behaviour. The poor seals already have to deal with fishermen hunting them for “taking all the fish” 🤦‍♂️
