      Translation from original article:

Republican Senator Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania reacts strongly to the fact that the oil fundhas sold out of the American company Caterpillar and five Israeli companies.

In a letter dated September 4, McCormick wrote to US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. There he believes that the United States must “reconsider all cooperation with Norway.

“He also proposes concrete countermeasures, such as higher customs duties, visa denials for Norwegians, and restricting Norway’s access to American financial markets.– If Norway can exclude American companies on this basis, there should be consequences, he writes.

**Believes that the oil fund weakens American interests**

McComick warns that this could have serious consequences for relations between Norway and the United States.

At the same time, McCormick calls himself a “friend of Norway”In a letter published by Jewish Insider to Anikken Huitfeldt, Norway’s ambassador to the United States, he thanks her for the hospitality during a visit this summer and for allowing the United States to use Norwegian military bases.

      – But this decision puts our friendship to the test, he wrote to Huitfeld .

McComick also says that he raised the matter directly with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap), but that he was “unsatisfied” with the response.NRK has asked the Prime Minister’s Office (SMK) for a comment, but has not yet received a response.

**Additionally, he wrote a letter to the Norwegian Ambassador to the USA**

McCormick believes the decision “undermines American companies and weakens our national interests.

“He is asking for the sale to be converted, and warns of political and economic measures if it does not happen.

McCormick also wrote a letter to Norwegian Ambassador Anniken Huitfeldt, expressing his “deep concern” over the decision.

He believes it is politically motivated, and argues that the exclusion of Caterpillar is in practice an indirect boycott of Israel, which he believes the United States cannot accept.

According to Jewish Insider, McCormick points out that Caterpillar has long been a main target of the BDS movement.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is a global campaign calling for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel, to influence the country to change its policies towards the Palestinians.

      **More protests from the USA**

McCormick is not the only one who has reacted.

The US State Department has expressed strong concern about the decision.

The ministry has previously written to NRK that the matter has been raised with Norwegian authorities.Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has previously threatened similar measures.

After Graham’s speech, Støre sent him a text message explaining that the oil fund is independent of the government.– Maybe it’s time to impose tariffs on countries that refuse to do business with large American companies, Graham wrote on X, after the oil fund withdrew from Caterpillar.

This summer, the oil fund sold off almost half of the Israeli companies, including Bet Shemesh, which maintains similar aircraft used for bombing Gaza. The reason is that several Israeli companies are contributing to serious violations of international law in the Palestinian territories.

Can someone notify him that Norway is in fact not an American state?

US senators wants to dictate finance decisions of foreign investment funds? Why am I not surprised.

Between this and the Nobel prize obviously not going to Trump… things could get hairy soon. Doubling of tariffs? Confiscation of funds? Svalbard 51st state?

Norways is required to invest in American companies?

Who is going to buy US bonds and treasuries if when you sell them you are going to be sanctioned?

The US reputation goes down the toilet.

I hope they do not end up with 39 % of Tarrifs like Switserland. These two countries (Norway and CH) are now really feeling the heat of not being part of a big economic bloc which can throw something in the scale in these kinds of discussions.

When bullies rule the world the small ones need to band together.

He wants to punish Norway for simply following capitalist principles and freely buying and selling shares in private companies? What do they care who owns those shares? Wanting to force someone to own something they don’t want is a really weird policy position.

In a normal society built on rule of law, the company sues for slander/libel and the evidence is shown in court. The Norwegian pension fund’s independent ethical council actually showed Caterpillar all the evidence of D9 dozers destroying civilian infrastructure in Gaza and the West Bank and asked them for input. Caterpillar refused to give any response and the fund management kicked them out.

In an authoritarian regime, there is no lawsuit. Instead the government gets involved with threats and punitive action, no evidence or argument needed.

Up to the US to decide which one they wanna be.

    11. SenAtsu011 on

Norway does this all the time.

The ethics council overseeing the ethical use and investment of the Oil Fund invest and divest in companies all the time due to changing geopolitics.

It only became a problem now because it was Israeli companies that were hit.

Self-report on who donates to this guy. What an idiot.

The US aren’t quite the fans of free markets that they’ve led us to believe

    13. watch-nerd on

I don’t quite get the logic behind the ethics council saying to sell Caterpillar because of Gaza.

Presumably, Caterpillar sells to the Israeli government (or a local distributor or whomever) and has no control over what the bulldozers are used for after that.

Does Caterpillar have any ability to stop its bulldozers from being used?

If not, it seems weird to blame them and sell the stock.

    14. Dudewithdemshoes on

The Norwegian oil fund should, as a reaction, just buy all of Caterpillar and make it a Norwegian company. And then close down all their operations in the US.
