In Finland we have this thing called “hyvin paska hallitus.”

The fact that trade to Russia has been fucked for years really doesn’t help either.

      Bad timing.

If you look at the map, Finland is in the middle of nowhere and we don’t have enough of natural resources either. We do have a lot of educated people, but only one economic center. Top that with highly politicized homogenous zealots filling our universities and public sector making Finland a socialist state, where it’s okay to cancel people outside this circle. Then this is what we get, and we have only ourselves to blame.

Lack of investment into R&D, lack of research funds, management complacency and currently a fetish for trickle down economics and a Government who read Ayn Rand as kids and brought into the fantasy.

Been going on for at least a decade and even longer for some aspects.

There’s a guy called Bjorn Wahlroos whom every economist in government worships it feels like. Started the trend to not spend on R&D long ago. He lives in Sween to avoid Finnish taxes…

    5. ONE of the reasons is export to Russia stopped. Export to russia wss 4,4 billion € or 1,8% in 2021(recalled from a thread yesterday on r/suomi) and now it is close to zero…

    6. Russian sanctions, it was very important specifally on the fuel and gas.

Mostly because Finland earned a lot on
      1. Business durectly in Russia ie Nokian and many other. No business – no taxes – no gdp
      2. Trade with Russia. Cheap resources for some goods ie heavy machinery with very high margin. Russians willingly overpaid for it.
      3. Thirdparty countries that were doing business with Russia, but preferred to keep HQ in Finland
      4. Thirdparty countries that were doing business in Finland started to leave due to higher risk of conflict with Russia (thanks NATO) and risks of business shutdown due to union strikes(thanks SAK). Business doesn’t want to pay Finlands salary to people who skip work several moths per year due to strike.
