I mean most of my friends know about him and respect him

He’s mostly forgotten. No mentions anywhere except in N-American lore.

I feel like nowdays its mostly foreign people hyping him up.

Wartime folkhero? He’s mentioned in history books as a notable footnote, and there are books and articles in literature about the winter war. Most people know of him in finland, some people who are more into history know more.

(I read a manga of him where he is genderbent anime girl. That short series has a cult fan base. Its pretty good considering its written by japanese mangaka.)

    5. Never heard of him when I was in school, but he was mentioned when I was in the army. Probably better known today, thanks to the internet. So I suppose he’s not universally known, but not forgotten either. There’s no hero worship, he was just a guy doing what he had to do, and he just happened to be really good at it.

He is mentioned in at least two rap songs made by “roadmen” so I guess the kids like him too.

Yes they teach about him in schools so the youth do know about him. He is respected as far as I know and i personally respect him but I also respect everyone who fougth for Finland during those times. In modern Finland his accompisments are mentioned. I personally think of him as a really cool guy and an amazing sniper.

    8. Abroad, the Winter War is often told through the story of Simo Häyhä “The Legendary Sniper who single handed won the war”. But here in Finland, we remember it differently. We know that the survival of our country was never the work of one man, no matter how gifted. It was the will and sacrifice of an entire people: soldiers in the trenches, volunteers in supply lines, families enduring the bombings, children sent to safety, and communities holding together through the bitter cold. The Winter War is remembered here not as a tale of one hero, but as the moment when a whole nation stood shoulder to shoulder.

wouldn’t last two minute in modern drone war. so lets ramp up those drone productions. seriously nokia should switch to selling drones and take us out of this shitty stagnant economy.

Back then after the war? Not good. The post war times were harsh to veterans.

I heard of him from foreigner hyping him, somehow funny that foreigners hype some guy who shot hundreds, or thousands of russians into face, he was like, human exterminator.

I only know about him because I have a friend who is a fan.

He’s true national hero like deer-hunting De Niro

Finland doesn’t really have a hero culture. He is known and respected for his achievements but the hype is mostly by foreigners or ultra nationalists. Häyhä himself for sure did not wish to be seen as a hero or a legend

I’m a 40+ Finnish man, as interested in war history as anyone in my cohort.

Frankly, I first learned about Häyhä from the internet memes. IMO he’s mainly famous in Finland for being famous on the Internet.

This is not to discount his service, but when our grandfathers served in the war in great numbers, it doesn’t really feel meaningful to reduce the history of Finland in WW2 into a meme about one man.

He was honored A LOT, but cos his face is a wild adventure he is not shown.
