It’s a masterclass in how to lose an election by first alienating your base to appeal to people who will never vote for you. Labour is so terrified of the fringe, they’re sawing off the main part of the electorate to join it.
If it’s not done using primary legislation and if they don’t use primary legislation to spell out that the right of the country to deport migrants outweighs their rights to be here, then they’re wasting their time because the courts will just nullify whatever the government comes up with and block deportations.
The asylum system just doesn’t work in the age of Ryanair. The Economist [did a good piece about it](https://archive.ph/2025.09.03-063301/https://www.economist.com/leaders/2025/07/10/scrap-the-asylum-system-and-build-something-better)
