Having already received 58 million, was the plan put forward to the government intentionally low or the people inept who made it?
The Irish Times has learned the operational budget for Ryder Cup 2027, which covers transport, security and local authority costs, has proved grossly insufficient. This originally accounted for €14.3 million of the €58m allocation of State funding, but a further €30 million is now being sought.
billionaires always looking for handouts
What a load of bollox. This man has plenty of fucking money.
Wants more of our money to put HIS Manor on the world stage for a few days?
Ask my bollox
Also, has he not sold the Adare Manor to the Canadians or Saudis? Sale not going through until after the Ryder Cup I hear…..
Can’t wait for him to be interviewed on the course during the event saying “Tis great for the local community”, knowing well he sold it…..
Cue all Limerick people attacking me……
Come on JP: Just take it out of one of your bank accounts there. Be grand…..
Only if the tax payer gets a return on that €30m. If not, he should finance his own vanity project.
Yeah I think the headline is fairly misleading here. It’s not as if McManus is going cap hand looking for more money.
The Ryder cup is a massive event and will bring in some serious money to the Limerick area, government should rightly be supportive of this.
Tell him to ask the government of Switzerland as that is where he pays his tax.
Sounds like the same play he made with the International Rugby Visitor Centre. He comes in, says he’ll pay for most of it when in reality he’s just putting down deposits and expecting the state to cover the rest.
Fool me once, shame on you and all that. The multiplier effect on an extra €30 million investment in the Ryder Cup is substantially smaller than a similar investment made in other sports. The real growth opportunity is in football.
Look how far Shamrock Rovers are getting now as a consistent European team with some decent management of player sale profits and prize moneys. Ironically a lot of the success stems there from the fact the local authority built and maintained a 21st century community football stadium around them.
lol cpnvenient time to drop this during the feelgood aftermath of Rory’s win
How about you pay some taxes first JP?!!
I think a bit more context needs to be shown in this rather than just straight up calling this a money grab. The Italian government apparently funded up to 157 million for the last Ryder cup in 2023. (Based on very quick googling not necessarily exact numbers). This was a Ryder cup that had to be rescheduled due to COVID from 2022.
So currently the Irish government has assigned 58 mil and JP/the organisers wants another 30. Taking inflation into consideration and the obvious extra cost of the rescheduling of the Italian Ryder cup… Is that not a comparable cost??
Again I haven’t fully fact checked all this. It was based on very quick googling and I could be wrong. But a bit more context should be included. Big events like this always cost a fortune. And literally nothing takes place in this day and age at the estimated cost. Everything ends up exponentially more expensive… I’m not saying that should be acceptable but again just give context to the criticism.
Privatise profits, socialise losses as usual.
Just don’t ask him for 30 million down the line for something he can’t use for a tax write off, he’ll call you a communist or something.
Can I just keep my income please.
WTF is this! F*ck Mc Manus and f*ck golf. Total waste of money. And stop gaslighting us about a windfall for the mid west, that’s also nonsense. What percentage of the population play golf? Jezus wept!
Why is an elitist sport being given millions?
I think the answer is in the question.
Another little piggie with his snout in the through
€30m?
That’s the same amount he spunked on the useless – and now shuttered – Rugby Museum in Limerick.
He gave 32 million to the gaa now he wants it back trough the tax payer
A man who has been tax resident outside the state (Switzerland) for the last 30 years, meaning he hasn’t paid income and capital gains taxes in Ireland since then, is seeking *another* handout of Irish taxpayers’ money to support another of his ego-boosting vanity projects.
Get fucked, JP.
Same cost as the Rugby Museum in Limerick he built and failed. Interesting that. He should sell it and get some money for this.
Handy he doesn’t have to pay tax, he’s just flash harry. .
Don’t all international sports tournaments need government money?
The quid pro quo is that the event attracts visitors who spend money.
I mean, if we were hosting the Olympic Games or World Cup, public money would be spent on it.
