Sadly, Russia won the Great Disinformation War back in 2012 – and is still winning it. For the past 13 years, Central and Eastern Europe have been on the frontline of this information war.

The people mentioned in that film look old enough to remember the 1968 occupation, but that generation is now in their seventies. These individuals were born into the period of “normalisation,” when Soviet soldiers were already stationed across Czechoslovakia.

Generation that was confronted by Soviet soldiers in tanks in 1968 would never consider Russian as a friend.

I wasn’t sure whether to post this, but I’ve myself encountered quite a few people (including relatives) who believe disinformation fueled crap along the lines of “Ukrainians brought this on themselves” or “Ukrainians are being used as pawns by the west” or “Russia has a right to defend itself against NATO expansion” or similar, that anything that gives insight into where that comes from and how to fight it is valuable.

I think the west is far too tolerant of intolerance (including outright pro-genocide advocacy). At this point it should be clear enough that state-created disinformation is a *military* attack, and it should be treated exactly the same as tanks or missiles. But even if all avenues of russian propaganda were cut off immediately, a lot of damage is already done. There are millions of “cognitive casualties”. How to help them?

My father in law once said years ago, pre covid, pre marriage: every cruel story about the red/ russian army is true, there is no propaganda on earth, to make the cruelty of this army unseeable … and if the victims tell the story, back than chechens, Georgians and yip crimea, that stories are the real story, the russian army will deny most crimes 🧐

Russia targets civilians. The videos of cities, towns & villages utterly destroyed by orcs is disgusting. The loss of innocent lives is heartbreaking. 💔🇺🇦

I think this is so spot on about why people hate. I saw a conversation between a woman and a trans woman where the former harbored so much anger towards trans people. During the conversation it turned out that someone close to her had died of breast cancer and that they had received sub par treatment (i don’t remember all the details..). And it seemed to me like she had this idea that trans women got all the medical help in the world (including breast construction) while she had experienced anything but. I just think that the people who feel unseen Are very easily exploited. You see it all over the world.
