I don’t think anyone else in the country is shocked, for a lot of them it’s a gravy train rather than a career they have any passion in

I don’t know how anyone could be given the power to enforce traffic laws and then show a lack of interest and avoid work. Give me the power to go and stop drivers who are acting the bollocks, I’ll do that shit for free.

That’s the public/civil service in a nutshell, zero consequences for doing a shit job.

I drive regularly from north Wexford to Dublin for work and have been since 2022 via M11. I’ve not seen a single patrol car every. Not once. What the fuck are these lads doing?

      From the report:

      >But the figures do prompt us to ask why, for example, one division has recorded two-and-a-half times the number of DWI detections per RPU member than another division; why two Garda divisions achieved almost double the number of speed detections in 2023 per RPU member when compared with the lowest-rated division of the five; and why one division appears to have been 57% more productive than the lowest-rated division across all Lifesaver detections per RPU member in 2023, and 52% more productive in the first ten months of 2024.

In the context of our site visit findings as detailed in Section 3 of this report, we believe that these productivity figures further illustrate a core problem within An Garda Síochána – the lack of effective supervision of RPUs and the inability (or unwillingness) of supervisors and more senior ranks to proactively supervise and manage the performance and productivity of RPU members.

Basically Garda management either is unwilling or unable to address productivity issues. And there are also issues with equipment not working.

Fundamentally however, if you can’t sanction someone – without blowback on you, also – then you can’t impact performance, really, can you?

I think at this stage we’ve all seen someone break traffic laws or really any law right in front of guards with no reaction whatsoever. I’ve seen them U-turn from a car being stolen by teenagers not long ago. I’m sure there are still good gardai but it seems a large part of the Dublin patrol doesn’t give a shit anymore and have left people to fend for themselves.

Sleeping Policemen use to be road speed bumps back in the day.How the times have changed.

The problem isn’t just individuals but a failure of systems, supervision, and culture.

Driving 12 years only time I see a garda is on a bank holiday Monday with the speed gun. No doubt collecting an extra salary in overtime.

      Try it sometime.

It’s kind of wild how much the media has pushed this, “Roads Policing Gardai have no interest in their job” narrative, when the actual report they’re referring to found the exact opposite.

      The actual conclusion was,

      >We have observed some examples of a poor work ethic and culture within the RPUs we visited, but they are isolated, and it would be incorrect to characterise all RPUs in this way

Mainly whats going on is that there are a small number of members (around 10%) sitting around with their fingers up their hole. The fact that there are Gardai who’ve no interest in doing their job, should come as no suprise to anyone. There is no company or organisation on earth where everyone is engaged and productive. 10% would seem to me to be a pretty typical number.

The problem is that the ability of senior Gardai to deal with this behaviour is somewhat limited.

Haven’t actually seen a checkpoint since covid.

I’ve seen police in unmarked cars on the M50 and N7 stopping cars.

The inquiry team are shocked? Were they flown in from a different country? Because I can’t see how anyone that uses Irish roads would be shocked whatsoever to learn Gardaí have no interest in policing the roads.

We have some of the safest roads in Europe, and roads policing sounds boring as it is. I’m not wildly surprised by the findings.

When I was studying there were a few ex-Gardaí doing it too and most of them said traffic policing was viewed as a shit gig.

    16. I got knocked off my bicycle, in a bike lane, by a driver and the obstruction and unwillingness by the Gardaí to do anything about it was shocking. The guard who handled my case was worse than useless.

It took 5 visits to the Garda station and me insisting on making a statement before they took one. They kept saying wait a few days and see if he pays up.

They put words in my mouth for my statement and said that I just wanted to be paid for my bike. I wanted the driver to face the consequences of his actions.

Apparently driving into a cyclist in a bike lane is careless not dangerous driving.

I had to point out a CCTV camera on an apartment building and he said “but how would I go about getting that footage” and I told him I had already contacted the management company and they had the footage preserved and passed on the number, which was on the notice board around the corner.

He said he got the footage but the plate wasn’t visible but the management company told me he didn’t bring a USB stick so didn’t actually take the footage.

He had a mobile phone number for the driver (who initially said he’d pay and then disappeared) but gave up on doing anything with that after he didn’t answer.

I don’t know if it was incompetence or wilful laziness and I don’t know which is worse.

    17. Driving 20 years and I’ve been stopped at a checkpoint once. I drive every single day on the m50 and the amount of truck drivers breaking the law is ridiculous and yet they are never stopped . Drove across Europe this year and I was pulled over multiple times just to check my papers and my driving licence

I have to say, we have had really positive experiences with our local gardai.
