You know we’re in deep shıt when promising to weaken human rights is being seen as a vote winner.

People assume that it will be others who suffer when human rights are stripped away, as obviously they won’t go after good people. Then they’re shocked at what the government defines as good people.

Reforming how it is interpreted by British courts is what’s on the table, Russia was under the jurisdiction of the ECtHR until 2022, the court and conventions were powerless to stop them invading crimea and commiting orders of magnitude worse human rights violations against Ukrainian citizens. The courts didn’t stop Azerbaijan ethnically cleansing parts of Armenia.
No one would argue those countries have better rights for their citizens than Canada or New Zealand.
Other Western European countries who see the echr as “guides” rather than gospel are able to do things that would never fly here, for example the migrant detention camps in Greece, Poland actually upholding it’s hard border with Belarus, France deporting people we wouldn’t and so on.
The problem is the the human rights act is called the “human rights act” and so any attempt to change it leads to a nuclear level freak out from people who think your “right to life” will be taken away and the death squads will turn up next week

Quite a blatant hit out at Shabana Mahmood, who’s been pretty vocal by Labour’s standards about ECHR reform. The Labour leadership really need to stop wanking off to outdated international laws
