The Eye of Odin will save us from the Russian threat of drones and missiles. In the literal sense of the term.
In 2022, the European Commission approved and financed a futuristic programme that will provide early warning from space if flying objects are about to cross the borders of the EU (and therefore NATO countries). The programme costs around €100 million for the design phase alone and is led by Germany, but with the participation of almost all 27 member states. Italy is represented by the company Leonardo.
The name Eye of Odin, which is an acronym, was obviously not chosen at random. It refers to Nibelung mythology: Odin is depicted with only one eye because he gouged out his second eye and offered it to the giant Mimir, guardian of the well of wisdom, in exchange for a sip of the magical liquid. In essence, it is a metaphor for the sacrifices that must be made to attain knowledge.
Well, with the Eye of Odin satellite system, whose final cost will be prohibitive, Europeans want to know what awaits them in the event of a conflict with Russia. Because this is what the Ukrainian reality teaches us: massive Russian attacks from the sky, every night, with aircraft and hundreds of drones moving together, and in the midst of it all, missiles with heavier explosive charges, including hypersonic ones travelling at crazy speeds.
An official EU document describes the project as follows: ‘A space-based system against the threat of ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles and anti-satellite weapons.’ According to the plans, the satellite system should improve European countries’ capabilities in the areas of early warning, technological intelligence and missile defence.
‘Europe’s sovereignty and defence capabilities will also be decided in space,’ explained Sabine von der Recke, a member of the board of directors of OHB, the lead company based in Bremen, Germany, at the time of the project’s launch.
For once – given the scale of the threat and the financial resources needed to tackle it – it seems that national rivalries have been put aside. The Eye of Odin consortium includes European aerospace giants such as Airbus, the Ariane group, Italy’s Leonardo and Thales. According to the leader, OHB, Occhio di Odino will be the cornerstone of the French-led European Twister project, which will combine “advanced space-based early warning capabilities and endo-atmospheric interceptors”.
In this regard, a consortium of four European nations has been formed to develop an anti-hypersonic interceptor missile. It is led by the Italian-French-German company MBDA (the same company that manufactures the Samp/T anti-aircraft batteries), which has signed letters of intent with France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands to launch a Hypersonic Defence Interceptor Study.

EU investing more in space *and* the military in one go? Impressive

Eye of Odin is a damn cool name. Bit cliché… but pretty epic nonetheless.
we further need:
– apple of idun (hand granade)
– Freya’s hair (smoke screen)
– Mjolnir (orbital laser)
– Mistilteinn (bunker buster munition)
– huginn/muninn (reconnaissance drones)
Maybe we can get some Greek contributions:
– Phaeton (wheeled suicide drone)
– Icarus (high altitude suicide drone)
– Medusa’s gaze (laser to shoot down drones)
– Odysseus (a suicide drone swarm centrally coordinated by a hub drone that returns, but takes a detour)
– We already have Trojan horses…
The UK could contribute “the one ring” – a remotely controlled bomb shaped like a smartphone… … it rings only once…

I guess the radars will be called Hugin and Munin?

This Star Wars fancy-shmancy stuff that will be *probably* deployed around 2050 against ballistic missiles is nice and all, but this is only anti-missile alarm system, while complex anti-drone protection is required right fucking now, it also should be as cheap as possible, and as mass produced as possible as well.
Skyguard/Skynex systems are already there, EU should really prioritize producing/testing them short-term.

Wouldn’t it just be faster and more moral to make NATO do it’s job and remove the threat instead of finding ways to live under it for another century? It’s just one evil country.

Well if anything that name rocks. And if they don’t name the implements of that system Thor’s hammer we’ll be heavily disappointed.
