They aren’t looking for an excuse. If they needed one, they would find one. And have already made hundreds of claims and hundreds of threats towards our nation.

They aren’t attacking NATO not because they couldn’t find a reason, and these words alone would provide it. They instead don’t attack because they knoew they WOULD be destroyed in the conflict.

      >As a dumb foreigner from western Europe I keep wondering: what are the chances of this misuse of words escalating into a global conflict?

      None.

      >Is it just me or I don’t see that happening? After all, Putin and his fellas are probably looking for just one good excuse to attack a NATO country such as Latvia, so shouldn’t we make sure we do not provide them with such an excuse? Would that be so hard to do?

A few words from Rinkevičs won’t change what fascist russia will or won’t do.

They will attack NATO if they think they can get away with it. It doesn’t matter what we say, that’s not the point.

Latvia has found they can throw their weight around safe in the knowledge Russia, very likely, won’t attack a NATO country.

We can’t say what Rinkevičs really meant, maybe he did mean to say Russia must be destroyed or it’s a translation error, who knows. And you didn’t provide a link to the article so it’s harder to ascertain.

As for the chances? Slim. Putin doesn’t care. His propagandists peacock for a domestic audience not international. Russia is very inward looking and only cares about Ukraine and what they can get. It’s a policy that’s never changed over the centuries.

Edit: the articles suggesting Rinkevičs called for destruction of Russia are from pro-Russia sources. Everywhere else translates his intention as defeated. It’s, as I thought, a translation issue and one being weaponised by pro-Russia outlets pushing for more nonsense.

      >Russia must be destroyed”.

      >I am pretty sure he meant to say: “Russia must lose the war with Ukraine”,

      did he stutter?

This has to be a troll for sure? No way Einstein said that.

Russia should have been destroyed years ago.

      It’s never too late.

Get your pseudo-intellectual bullshit out of here. Weak people like you are the exact reason why Russia felt comfortable enough to launch an all out war on Ukraine in the first place. You can’t negotiate with someone whose only directive is to destroy you.

Good, this is the only language that bullies understand.

I don’t want us to act polite with a government that thinks that the existance of our country is an accident.

    10. >I am pretty sure he meant to say: “Russia must lose the war with Ukraine”, but it’s easy to see how the expression can be easily misunderstood and subsequently weaponized by Russian propaganda.

Historically “Carthago delenda est” (Carthage must be destroyed) was said by Cato the Elder in the Roman senate before the 3rd Punic War, after which Carthage was indeed destroyed by the Rome.

Difference here is that Rome was “superpower” of its day with army and economy to back it up against its rival Carthage.

While Latvia is a smallish state with very little military and economical power. It would be like some smallish tribe or city state with loose alliance with Rome on the border with Carthage, barking against it.

No western politician from a large NATO state would allow himself to say something like that. Rinkevičs probably thought himself as a member of west, spokesman for NATO, instead of president of Latvia with little real power.

      >Is it just me or I don’t see that happening? After all, Putin and his fellas are probably looking for just one good excuse to attack a NATO country such as Latvia, so shouldn’t we make sure we do not provide them with such an excuse? Would that be so hard to do?

Russia isn’t that dumb or desperate (yet) to start war with NATO because some small state president blabbing his mouth, but Rinkevičs himself better watch out. He publicly called for literal destruction of Russia, which is something noone in the western political circles want. Russia might not forget or forgive him this.

About a decade (maybe more) another German or French politician said that the Baltic States had missed an opportunity to keep silent. It did not end well for him, and we are also making sure to miss any other opportunity to stay silent.

    13. topforce on

      >what are the chances of this misuse of words escalating into a global conflict?

That is more likely to deescalate situation than escalate. Most likely wont have any impact at all. On the other hand the rhetoric: Please Mr. Putin be reasonable and don’t hurt, us will have opposite effect.

      >but it definitely will start with the Baltic states dragging everybody else into a global conflict that could have been avoided from the start if only people used a bit more of diplomacy and acted smarter

Russia is invading Ukraine as we speak, if things escalate further it won’t be considered start anyway.

      >But here’s the point. While in school, upon encountering a classmate displaying a lack of intellectual acumen and a propensity for violence, the preferred approach was to refrain from provocation, maintain composure, steer clear of conflict, exercise intelligence, and seek to de-escalate the situation.

Might sometimes work with kids and teenagers, but only thing Putin understands is strength.

    14. Jewboy08 on

It does not matter what anyone from the Baltics says. Biden called Putin a SOB, nothing happened.

The Baltics were very careful not to offend any Russian feelings for like 30 years. You think Ukraine was invaded because someone said something? No. Putin views the whole region as his fucking property due to Russia having occupied it at some specific point in the history. We are on the agenda anyway. So now we use the time when the West sees Russia for what it actually is to try and rally support for Ukraine and to take the threat seriously before it is too late.

You do not stop a bully by dodging him. Sorry, but you must be a woman who has never faced actual bullies. If you are a target, the bully will find you and beat you up anyway. At his time and place of chiosing. You stop a bully only by beating his bully ass up. As we are much smaller, better do it why he is down and do it in a pack.

Russia has pleanty of reasons to attack if they wanted to. if anything such rhetorics, in Russias eyes, are show of strenght and pervents Russia to attack or escalate
