Beckett would no doubt be surprised at the opening two-minute single-shot running gun battle, but you have to admit it’s a novel treatment.

Some great pairings have tackled this over the years. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan, Steve Martin and Robin Williams… And in their student theatre days, Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson. The experience must have stayed with them: “Bottom” is basically Godot with fart jokes and violence
