Tahir Gökçebel, Secretary General of the Secondary Education Teachers’ Union, stated that headscarf-wearing students were allowed into Bekirpaşa and Atatürk Vocational High Schools with the support of “agents from the Turkish Embassy in Nicosia.” Gökçebel argued that this was part of the ideological transformation the AKP regime is attempting to implement in the education system.

Tahir Gökçebel, Secretary General of the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS), was a guest on the Morning News program hosted by Canan Onurer on Kıbrıs Postası TV.

“AT LEAST 30 PERCENT OF 48 SCHOOLS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION”

Gökçebel, who first evaluated the 2025-2026 academic year in the program, stated that at least 30 percent of the 48 schools are under construction; he also pointed out that the schools have many other problems, not just physical ones.

“REGISTRATION FEES CHARGED DUE TO THE PROBLEMS SCHOOLS EXPERIENCE ARE ILLEGAL”

Gökçebel stated that the registration fees charged to schools due to difficulties they face are illegal, and that the Ministry of National Education aims to meet school needs through these methods when school budgets are insufficient. Gökçebel noted that the ministry is failing to utilize the allocated budget, which she described as a management weakness.

“Yesterday, two headscarved students were allowed into two separate high schools by ‘embassy agents’.”

Gökçebel, speaking about the Disciplinary Code Amendment, stated, “Yesterday, ‘agents from the Turkish Embassy in Nicosia,’ in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, ensured the entry of headscarved students to Bekirpaşa and Atatürk Vocational High Schools.” Gökçebel argued that this was an ideological structure the AKP regime was attempting to establish through its efforts to transform the education system in impoverished societies. She argued that an educational system was being created for a system of opposition with defined boundaries, and that anyone who crossed these boundaries would be threatened.

Gökçebel, who also evaluated the Minister of National Education’s statement that “we opened 19 schools,” noted that almost all schools, including the newly opened ones, have a crowded structure and that educational environments filled with containers are problematic for students’ development.

“THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION HAS ESTABLISHED A PROFIT SYSTEM IN THE MINISTRY TO BE ABLE TO RE-APPEAR AND GATHER VOTES; THAT IS WHY PROBLEMS ARE EXPERIENCED IN INSTITUTIONS”

Finally, Gökçebel addressed the canteens and their prices at the school campuses, stating that the criteria used to provide service are unclear and that the quality of the products is not inspected. Gökçebel claimed that a “profit system” exists in almost all tenders awarded by the ministry, especially for canteens. She stated that the minister exploits corruption and irregularities to secure his re-election, that institutions are being dismantled for the sake of votes, and that this policy is the root of education’s problems.
