It’s true but I looked into this before. We have a high share when you measure it by kilometers, but if you do it by number of trips it’s just 4% for 2023. Basically Irish people use public transport less often but travel long distances when they do.
I don’t think thats the brag they think it is. No rail system of note, no metro of worthiness. Being forced on busses as the only poorly managed public transport system is not something i would wave flags about

It’s one of the main arguments for Metro Link that is never said.
We have a chronic shortage of bus drivers, even with the State really pushing in recent years for expansion of services.
Being automated, Metro Link will release significant manpower back for other bus service uses.

It’s because we have a shit rail system

And that’s a really sad thing. It’s to compensate for the lack of other public transport. I don’t like sitting in busses for hours just to go to work from North Dublin to South Dublin. But there is absolutely no other way for me to make this journey that also saves time, except if I drive a car or bike for 10km one way without good cycling infra in place. Busses at the moment in Ireland are a compensatory mechanism for the lack of transport planning to assist the daily commute. This should change.

Conveniently trams are left out of this summary.
Also there are no other options really here than buses and cars. Maybe the Luas and some trains locally.
So, surprise…

Because we don’t walk enough.

Mostly because we’re so incredibly lacking in trains.
