I read a lite book on geopolitics once and there was a chapter about Russia. It claimed that the land in Russia’s west is mostly flat without any good barriers separating them from western powers. So, it claimed, Russia has always had to push west and conquer regions that protect the flatlands to Moscow. I thought that was interesting.
