Its a very small start but I think its fair to give the scheme a bit of time to see how it goes. The chance of simply being sent right back to France will hopefully deter some people from paying people smuggling gangs an extortionate amount for the small boat crossing.

Seriously impressive how quickly they got this going since it took the Tories years, and even then only after paying migrants to leave.

And certain members of the far right will be very disappointed by this news….

Labour want this sorted so it will finally be gone from British politics, which is why they have the best chance of fixing it.

The Tories and Reform only care about flashy policies instead of real solutions, because they only see the migrant crisis as an electoral opportunity.

    5. Cautiously optimistic about it if they can do something about the legal challenges and ramp it up quickly.

I’ve been fairly critical of the scheme so far, but I’d like to be proven wrong

I see a lot of misunderstandings about this policy – it isn’t actually about deporting people, it’s about stopping people crossing over entirely.

If you know if you cross over on a boat you will likely just be returned to France, that immediately makes the whole effort pointless.

The UK is happy to tie the deportation to 1 person imported because its proportional to those coming over on boats. As the people crossing over decreases (as they will just now be returned to France so there is no motivation), the number of people the UK imports from this policy also decreases. If they can get this to work it has the potential of instantly fixing the small boat crisis.

Curious what the headlines will be tomorrow.

Either completely skirting around it with a random front-page about a frog that crossed the road

or a front page with Farage criticising it.
