> Signing a nomination paper is not a signal of electoral support
I mean, it says it in the article. I’ve no time for the man, but he’s fulfilling his office correctly here.

Is there a list of those who’ve nominated her? Be interesting to see what their stance on gay marriage and abortion was at the time.

Maria Steen has so little faith in our national schools that she homeschools her children. Think about how intertwined Catholicism is with our schools and that’s not enough for her.

Always seems to be a few very old style remnants of conservative days in the Dáil and Seanad still quietly hankering after the 1950s.
Irish politics to a large degree got dragged along by rapidly evolving public opinion on issues like divorce and abortion, and also LGBTQ rights. Always found a big cohort of the centre of Irish politicians who desperately clung to the fence on many of those issues, never mind sitting on it, until it was abundantly clear that the fence had completely collapsed, and then tended to jump on board, and nearly claimed the credit for other people’s decades of campaigning as they were suddenly socially progressive… even though their own parties had been the ones doing the oppressing that they’d somehow now won the struggle against!
I’m glad Ireland changed, but I sometimes find when you see say FF or FG patting themselves on the back for no longer being stuck in the 1870s on some of those issues, you’d really wonder.
There’s a lot of them who are just cautious weathervanes.
It just annoys me when you then start to see this kind of thing crawling out of the woodwork again, particularly when it’s independent local issue types who’ve no clear position on anything.

She’s a complete ghoul and should have no chance of winning, still sad to see her on the ballot

I really hope that dose doesn’t get on the ballot. If she does we’ll have all the “Love boats” knocking on our doors re-running the repeal the eight campaign.

Lol you can only back one Michael. Then again, it isn’t all that surprising he’d back Steen. They’re both very conservative in their views of same-sex marriage and abortion, etc.

If Steen can get 3 more nominations to bring her to 15, Independent Ireland should give her their 4 nominations and Gogarty said he’d support anyone to get over the line.
So the Oireachtas route might actually be possible for her

I doubt anyone outside of Kerry cares what he thinks.

Maria Steens politics are the type of politics rooted in Catholic fundamentalism. A spokesperson for the Iona Institute. Are we going to start sticking kids down sewers and reopening Madgalene Laundries? And Healy Ray is a cretinous politician. I’m in a state of disbelief he backed her…

Steen up to 12 nominations now.
Talking out of both sides of his mouth as usual
