    1. >The new legacy framework includes a series of special protections for former British military veterans who served in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

      >The measures include “protection from old age”, with the document stating that there will be a statutory duty “to take into account the health and well being of potential witnesses at all times.”

      >There is no stated upper age limit and it is not clear whether the safeguard would apply to defendants as well as witnesses.

      >There is also “protection from repeated investigations”, with a stipulation that “veterans will not be required to provide unnecessary testimony on historical context that has already been established.”

      >Veterans will have a right to seek anonymity when giving information and a “right to stay at home” meaning they can’t be forced to travel to Northern Ireland to give evidence to the Commission or to an inquest.

Is it just me or does this sound like it’s going to be even harder to prosecute British soldiers for their crimes in NI?

It was a civil war. Lots of nasty stuff happened by both sides. So Offering protection from prosecution for side A and not side B is just asking for blowback.

As expected from the party running a loyalist candidate for the presidency.

The one good thing the Israelis ever did was set the precedent for international extra-judicial kidnapping (Eichmann).

Am I going mad or does this agreement have nothing for the Irish side literally a get out of jail free pass for the brits

    6. Sounds like the Irish government are going out of their way to help prosecute republicans and protect veterans. Nice one you cunts.

    7. Why would a soldier carrying out orders have a different legal standing to a paramilitary carrying out orders?

Hard to say this was negotiations between Britain and Ireland when it looks like the Irish government is working on behalf of Britain. What does Ireland get out of this?

Anyone who thinks for a moment that the Brits will be genuine in owning up to their imperial and colonial campaigns in Ireland is as thick as champ.

Absolute betrayal. We haven’t even scratched the surface on collusion. The british have sealed innumerable files. Dublin /monaghan, ballymurphy miami showband. Glennane gang. How many dead children at the hands of soldiers. How are we in this situation to have such weak incompetent spinless cowards leading us

    11. the irish government are bunch of west brit free state cunts and they prove that to us every time. making it harder to prosecute british state terrorists while using every breath to condemn the irish resistance to them. they’ve made it clear they don’t care about ireland.

Simon “the ratbag” Harris up to his old tricks. We ain’t seen nutin yet

    13. This agreement basically replaces the unilateral British Legacy Act, and is a major improvement. It is a joint agreement rather than unilateral. It lifts the current ban on taking civil cases related to the Troubles and restores inquests which were stopped under the Legacy Act legislation. It provides oversight and independence to the governing board.
