And so we have the final 3.

It will be an interesting dash to election day.

Lots of talk around it being “undemocratic” from people who don’t know who parliamentary politics works.

I wouldn’t have had an issue with her being on the ballot personally, not that I would’ve voted for her.

But the people claiming this is some sort of injustice are very sinister. They want to dismantle our republic and our democratic institutions.

The over 50 cohort of Irish men who now want to LARP as American revolutionaries should engage with some political reading. It’s good to educate yourselves on your country.

And here I really thought Gemma’s endorsement would get her over the line… 🤥

    4. RavagedCookies on

      That’s unfortunate for her.

I wouldn’t have voted for her as she didn’t represent my views but it’s a balls to come so close and not make it

Thank fuck, I cry no crocodile tears for someone who wants to take legal rights away from my family. I would have torn my hair out if I had to listen to four more weeks of RTÉ calling her a “family rights” campaigner. She doesn’t respect me and isn’t suitable for the Aras.

    6. In a three horse race, it will all come down to transfers.

Jim or Heather will be the next president. Depends who is more transfer friendly from Catherine.

I didn’t know much about her until today. Her wikipedia is weird. She was taught to read and write by her mother before she started school… so was I love, it’s not a big achievement.

She chooses to homeschool her kids… we will soon have a Catholic Enoch! Yay..

Catherine Connelly is going to win this thing isn’t she and she’s going to spend the whole time acting like she’s the President of Nicaragua

Maria Steen suddenly thinks people should have the right to choose.

    10. southerndandy123 on

It’s hilarious that a millionaire barrister is being touted as the anti-establishment voice.

Not that we’re being spoiled for choice, but I for one am delighted Maude Flanders didn’t represent our country. What an out of touch, backwards representation of Ireland she would have been.

    12. Logical_News7280 on

Can’t wait for the “silent majority” to start clambering “they’re trying to silence us” “this isn’t democracy”.

    13. HibernianMetropolis on

This is fantastic news. For someone like Steen, becoming president was never a realistic possibility. She will have known this. What she wanted was a platform to spout her religious dogma. She would have insisted on 25% speaking time across all televised debates etc. This was all a play for publicity. I’m delighted that the opportunity has been denied to her.

The closed system of nominations has its pros and cons, but there’s a bit of inconsistency in that in the last 3 open elections we got a very broad field (6 candidates 2018, 7 in 2011, 5 in 1997), and this time we are getting a super narrow one (3 candidates) – last time we got 3 was in 1990. Basically the big parties were happy for a wide field but aren’t this time and closed ranks.

Maria Steen does represent a slice of the electorate that the 3 candidates we now have probably don’t align to. Minority consent is a part of a well functioning democracy.

(I personally didn’t enjoy the 6-7 candidate elections, but I think that when you break the seal and go have a wide field and let your councillors etc nominate, you’ve set a precident).

    15. barker505 on

Pity. We have three incredibly mediocre candidates. A fourth candidate would have livened up the race.

    16. Fornici0 on

I am honestly surprised. I believed it was a foregone conclusion that she’d get the nominations.

    17. Mean_Exam_7213 on

If you want people to nominate you, get them elected. That’s proper democracy, not relying on handouts from your opponents at the 11th hour and crying about how they won’t…

Now let all the anti ff/fg people put there vote where their mouth is

I look forward to all of these people running for Dáil Éireann, the European Parliament or their local councils at their next opportunity.

Catherine Connolly is the only candidate who is in any way similar to Michael D in terms of compassion and integrity in my opinion. She’s the obvious choice. Heather Humphries literally told a journalist the other day to “F off and leave me alone.”

A nice victory for marganilised people and women not having to listen to this fucking dinosaur prattling on about them living in sin because they don’t agree with her Castle Catholic view of the world.

“Family Rights Advocate”, she is and was a bigot. Nothing more.

    22. Glad to hear it. The Iona Institute doesn’t have a place in Irish politics.

    23. I was worried when Steen was interviewed on RTE News that she said that she had been contacted by an American (? Irish-American) businessman who wants to start a new political party in Ireland.

American right-wing people have been influencing European elections in ever-increasing amounts over the past few years including in Germany and Farage in the UK. We have to be diligent and determined that they don’t get a foothold here.

    24. Pristine-Package-159 on

I have never heard of the woman. Surely someone going for that role should be a well known public figure – nationwide.

    25. ninjaconor86 on

      >The last time there were only three candidates standing for president was during the 1990 election.

There was only one candidate in 2004.

    26. SectionPrestigious89 on

This is what happens when you don’t say your prayers.

    27. Grand-Cup-A-Tea on

From the comfort of my armchair, it seems quite apparent to me that the reason why Steen and other candidates failed to get the required nominations was their campaigns were based on values rather than policy, which shows a lack of understanding of the role of the president.
