Newgrange was also constructed under the first iteration of the PWC, or the Public Works Contract.

There is a long passage in the monument, where on the winter solstice light shines directly down the passage for a few minutes. What it proves is that that the builders carefully observed the sun’s movements and aligned the monument with cosmic cycles.

      About 5000 years ago.

It was built before stonehenge abd the pyramids. It also proves that the society was organised and highly organised, some of the stone came from miles away. Its about 300 feet across and took a lot of effort to built.

I was there a few years ago, its something special. There’s also a few other monuments there – dowth etc

Would have been built 1,000 years before the pyramids but planning objectives took a while to resolve.

    4. How the hell did they get planning permission for that absolute monstrosity? I’m shocked and appalled, it’s a complete eyesore and should be knocked immediately, it’s a perfectly good location that could be used to build housing.

“Despite their relative technology”. My only issue with some of these posts is that they are somehow surprised that any of these ancient people around the world who built structures for the winter/summer solstices is a surprise. It’s the slippery slope towards the likes of Graham Hancock and et al tripe.

They literally depended on the sun for their farming and survival. Knowing when the winter solstice would have been important because they could then reasonably guess when the growing season would begin again in spring and from that calculate how much of the food left from the harvest they would need to sustain people and animals.

This is probably the origin of the whole winter festival we see across cultures. On a good year, after you work out what’s needed to survive to the spring you have a big party and feast with the excess.

They hardly finished on a long weekend. They could well have been altering it for years to make it just right.

Ancient estate agent: you’ll get a full 17 mins of sun a year.

Ancient first time buyers: Ah jeez in this market we’ll take it.

Alas! the sponsor’s logo that was highlighted has since eroded. They also sponsored the cursus line dancing….

      >…the structure is designed so that only 17 mins of sunlight hit the inner chamber each year

Just like some of the houses built during the Celtic Tiger years. Not much changed in Irish construction over 5000 years.

That photo on the main page was taken on an iPhone at the time of construction by the foreman on site 😂😂
