I’m from Hamburg and only recently learned that our local billionaire Klaus-Michael Kuehne (Kuehne + Nagel) has never really dealt with his family’s role during the Nazi era. His company profited directly back then, yet he refuses to acknowledge or document it.
Meanwhile Germany is busy renaming streets and confronting its colonial past — but somehow it seems acceptable for a living heir to ignore this chapter entirely. Feels like a double standard in a country that otherwise prides itself on being self-critical about history.
What also bothers me: if Hamburg actually wins the Olympic bid, there’s a real chance that some of the projects will end up financed with his money.
Surprise, suprise?
He’s been living in Switzerland since 1975 and has his company’s head office there, too. Doesn’t even keep an apartment in Hamburg as the tax authorities would immediately go after him.
Not “the richest man in Germany” at all, weird that they would title it like that.

Interesting Video about the wealth of some Germans, and the nazi background of said wealth.
Ah, good old Switzerland, neutral even towards the biggest of crimes if the price is right.
Most of my father’s working career was spent with Kuehne & Nagel. The 60s and 70s were the company’s biggest expansion periods worldwide, with branch offices opening up all over the place. It’s why I (a German) spent next to no time in Germany until the 2010s.
It doesn’t surprise me one bit that Kuehne is massively wealthy, and it doesn’t surprise me one bit that this is why he’s in Switzerland.
The allies allowed VW,BASF,BMW, and Audi to exist after WWII. Nuff said.
Ahh the movers….
Hope Israel knows about this.
