Have we tried increasing the minimum wage and other costs on businesses?

I wouldn’t either, he’s had one failed apprenticeship. I wouldn’t offer him another.

Unfortunately with apprenticeship and trades, it’s who you know, not what you know or your work ethic.

I know many people from young who knew sparkies etc friends of the family and they all did really well and got taken on.

Unfortunately my dad’s best friend was a spark and he passed away very young.

It is tough out there for youngsters in the job market.

We need to start training one of our own for every job we import someone for.

No offence to guy in the picture, but people often judge people within the first few seconds based on looks, and his chosen style makes him look a bit dodgy honestly.

But as per the article he’s not getting past the email stage, and this is probably due to them already having failed one apprenticeship or just poorly written applications.

Another uninspiring story from the BBC that does not reflect the reality for most people.

      >He was previously employed with a construction business, but they were unable to keep him on as an apprentice as they claimed there could be added costs and lengthy training.

Rough translation ” Even though the apprenticeship is subsidised, we’re letting you go and taking the next lad out of the revolving door, because cheap labour is good and god forbid we actually have to train you or *gasp* pay you more eventually. But we’ll give you a bollocks excuse because you won’t know. GL HF ”

Alot of the time it is the larger employers taking the piss.

Alot of trades don’t want to take an apprentice on as alot of 16-17 year olds can be unreliable.

Not all but alot of them will turn up late, not be ready at 5am, play on their phone etc.

It is an ongoing issue with the construction industry in particular that the DfE just doesn’t understand when they talk about boosting apprentice number. For the first 6 months to a year they are a drain on the company.

It’s not even the wages, PPE costs or any other overheads. It’s that they need babysitting. They have to be taught how to do things, given time to practice, have their work checked and the entire time someone needs to keep an eye out to make sure they don’t do anything stupid. You are reducing the work that whoever ends up managing them gets done until the apprentice gets enough experience. That is less of an issue for huge companies but any small or medium business that is already overstretched simply cannot manage an apprentice.

I know the company I work for has rejected plenty of apprentices like the one in the article because we simply did not have the capacity. So I sympathise.

But I thought everyone who goes to Uni is wasting time and there’s thousands of apprenticeships there that people should be doing?
